Gold Star Mothers May Be Given Preference In Civil Service

B G Hamblin, Director of the San Diego County Veterans Service Department, says a 80th Congress change to the Veterans Preference Act of 1944 allows premothers to receive preference in federal civil service exams and appointments under certain conditions. If the mother has not remarried and was widowed at the time of the son or daughter’s death or disability, she qualifies. If divorced or separated, the veteran must have been an only child. Residents may obtain full information at Room 334 Spreckels Theatre Building, San Diego.

Judge Glen Urges Big Vote Tuesday

Superior Judge William A. Glen urges voters to study candidates records and cast a strong ballot in the upcoming primary. Glen, appointed last year by Gov. Earl Warren, stresses that even in a primary many races will be decided and urges informed participation.

Son of Former Resident Dies at Palm Springs

Jimmie, four and a half year old son of Mr and Mrs James Rector, drowned in a swimming pool at Palm Springs on Thursday May 20. Funeral services were held in Los Angeles May 25. Mrs Rector is the former Marion Bradshaw who lived here many years while her father managed the Crown Drug store.

Scissors Grinder Keeps Daily Quotations For Passers By

John Warner Butler, 74, returns from Vauclain Home and renews daily quotations on a blackboard near the Piggly Wiggly in front of Albeck apartments. Butler, an eight year local scissors grinder, writes lines from the Bible and Confucius with help from his friend Joe Reitinger during illness. He lives at 1084 Adella Avenue. Friday's quip urged sharing as the law of love.
