Fire causes $2000 damage to house on 996 Avenue
Early Sunday afternoon a fire damaged a residence of Dr. Janis H. Gillan at 996 Avenue. Estimated loss stood at $2000 with only part covered by insurance as Coronado fire crews battled the blaze attracting hundreds of residents and beachgoers a half mile away.

Horner Captures City Golf Title In Coronado Event
Insurance salesman Horner won the official City Golf Championship last Sunday by defeating Lt. Frank Greene of the police department in the final flight of the first annual Coronado event. Chick Fewster beat CHIF Allore for the second trophy as six Dean trophies were awarded in three flights. Fred Kindswater earned low net honors and a playoff for that title is planned next week. Forty Coronado golfers participated. trophies will be displayed at Bank of America. Contributions came from the Coronado Chamber of Commerce Island Cafe Colony Restaurant and the golf club Four Firemen.

Sailor Held After Alleged Wife and Child Beating
John J. Munn a 2 year Navy sailor at Naval Air Station was jailed on felony charges after allegedly beating his wife Maria 24 and children Joey 14 Nancy 4 at their 1776 Third Street housing unit. Police say Mrs Munn shielded the children as officers found a shattered apartment. Bail set at 1000 with District Attorney to file charges under Section 273-D. Officers Robertson and Vosburgh brought Munn to Coronado jail after neighbors called to screaming.

Youth Center Sparked Coronado Civic Pride
The Coronado Youth Center story began in 1944 when the Coordinating Council proposed a youth club to replace the lack of a dedicated meeting place. Citizens, schools, and leaders raised funds, with Edmund Jaque offering design pro bono and Mayor Clarence Anderson backing city support. the center opened March 30, 1946 to foster citizenship, activities, and community spirit.

Veteran San Diego Captain Blaisdell Rites Held
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon for James Makee Blaisdell 69 of 146 H Avenue in San Diego County. A San Diego Coronado Ferry Company captain since 1988 he served two war years commanding the Mary B Kinney Liberty ship. Born in Hawaii he began seafaring at 16 aboard the Edward Sewall and rose to master aboard the Mra heeee Gorn Johns. Brother W K Blaisdell of Honolulu and Thomas W Transue of Chester survive along with a half mast ferry company salute.
