Romance of Coronado series begins at Castle by the Strand
This installment recalls the 1884 idea by Eisha Babcock and H. L. Story to build a grand resort on Coronado Island. They formed a syndicate, bought the island, and engaged James Reid to design the Hotel del Coronado. Construction began with railway, water, and lighting systems, and a rapid land rush brought in staff before opening in 1888.
