Street Improvement Progress Report and Sewers Underway

The rapid street improvement project gains momentum with Garnsey and Pitzer deploying 100 workers and 60 teams on cement gutters along Temescal street. A. S. Bent to supply cement pipes within two weeks. Ford of Riverside finishes Taylor avenue work while Long Beach Construction begins sewer excavations across the Santa Fe tracks in Temescal wash with twelve men and expanding crews.

Gas Company Lays Larger Mains

Gas and Electric workers upgraded town gas mains to improve winter pressure. A six inch main was installed on Railroad street and a four inch main in the alley between Sheridan and Belle. Five alleys between Eighth and Ninth streets will get larger pipes and all customers will receive one inch service pipes, with no pipe smaller than two inches in alleys. The changes aim to ensure better service this winter.

Improvement Club Holds First Regular Meeting

The Woman's Improvement club met after a Taft visit caused a one week postponement. Miss Stella Platt opened the session and Mrs S B Hampton became president. Seventy five ladies attended with a program on California highways and arts, followed by tea and piano selections.

Land and Gravel Co organized in Corona

Local capital formed the Corona Land and Gravel Company after securing a lease on 49 acres in Moulton and Praed subdivision east of the county bridge on Riverside road. A modern sand and gravel screening plant with 200 yards daily capacity and storage will operate, with A. S. Bent company and Garnsey & Pitzner handling output. E J Genereux will be secretary and E P Newton manager. full operation expected by week’s end.

Brumier Ranch Threatened by Foothill Fire

A foothill blaze south of Corona menaces Brumier ranches after spreading from Bedford canyon to Rugby schoolhouse area. Twenty men fought flames through Sunday night and into Monday, with rangers and volunteers assisting as fires reach government reserve. No major property damage reported except several bee ranches burned. crews remain in the hills for days to gain control.

Corona Ball Team Loses Game to Cucamonga Twirlers

The Corona team, missing regular players, lost 18 to an unspecified score to the Cucamonga Twirlers at Grapevine Village on Sunday. Officials’ disputed calls worsened the defeat as Corona faced a semi pro San Bernardino squad last week. Next Sunday Perrig will host the locals.

J. R. Smith owner of Main Department store in Santa Ana trades his business there to Backstrand & Grout of Riverside for an alfalfa ranch in Corona. The grocery department remains with Q. R. Lindsay. Smith and family will likely split time living in Corona.

Corona High Loses Season Opener 20 to 3 at Anaheim

Corona High School fell 20 to 3 to Anaheim in the opening football game played at Fullerton. Corona led 3 to 5 in the first half, but injuries to English Beebe and Corkhill weakened the lineup in the second half as Anaheim pulled away. Coach Scoville notes lighter bodies but fondly recalls last season’s pace and promises further improvement. Next week Corona travels to meet Ontario Phi with a public report in the following issue.
