A French assault along a twelve mile front near Lens to Arras ends with a focused bayonet attack. After a heavy artillery and machine gun bombardment, the French capture a half mile of German trenches in a rapid 20 minute action. A brief bayonet clash near VicKery is noted.
London dispatches say Berlin counters Russian reports of German defeats and notes invasion of Poland continues. Galicia actions, Tuchow clash, and French gains in Alsace area described along with trench holds near Apermont. Washington reports President Wilson foresees indemnities for Britain over contraband seizures.
Poll Perritt, a Los Angeles pitcher, mistook guide Herbert Lathrop for a mountain lion during a Monta hunt near Nordhoff. Lathrop died from the wound the night of the incident and authorities reported his death today.
Tramps considered unwelcome by San Bernardino and Colton are shuffled between the two cities by local peace guardians. San Bernardino police drive them to the city limits then Colton police escort them back, with bread and coffee provided, creating a continuous half mile loop between the two towns.
