Mrs. M. H. Bert arrived home after a two week trip around Los Angeles. She and Mr. Bert spent ten days at Catalina Island and visited Tropico San Gabriel and the beaches. He joined her upon her return to the city yesterday while T. E Brown of the Independent force visited Los Angeles and Fullerton.

Riverside Police Empty Much Booze

Riverside deputy chief Carlson poured 312 bottles of beer and 10 demijohns of wine into the sewer after raids. The wine cellar at the police station overflowed, so contents of the beer bottles and whiskey flasks were emptied and the empty beer bottles sold to a junk dealer.

Chinese Sent Home At Germanys Expense

Two Chinese laundrymen who appealed to be taken off the German cruiser Leip zig in San Francisco harbor will be sent home at Germanys expense. They have been quartered at Angel Island since and Vice Consul Baron von Schack paid 375 dollars to the Toyo Kisen Kaisha Steamship company for their passage to China.

Each of the eleven precincts in the supervisorial district will have a polling place. Voters cast ballots by party with separate Republican and Democrat ballots. The primary nominees will appear on the general election ballot on November 3.

Panama Canal Earnings Rise With Early Traffic

In its first week of operation the Panama Canal earned about 45000 dollars not counting charges for largo service and advance payments for ships en route. Sixteen ships used the canal so far: fourteen American, one British, one Peruvian. Officials say wartime shipping traffic is steady but below expectations as war draws ships away.

G A R Encampment to Be Entertained by Detroit Taxpayers

Detroit prepares the forty eighth annual G A R encampment with city funds and a large civic committee. A special tax levy for veterans entertainment has been approved, souvenirs will cost the city over twelve thousand dollars, and advertising is barred. Decorations include twenty two foot white columns, oil paintings of valor, flags and electric lights. Local business groups aid in decorations and illumination across the city.

Japan Will Now Make War

San Francisco August 24 Japan's declaration of war against Germany has not changed the sailing time of the Shinyo Maru. The Shinyo Maru is due to sail tomorrow at 6 p.m. for Japan with 200 passengers and more than 2000 tons of merchandise. It is likely the Shinyo Maru and similar ships will be used as transports or auxiliary cruisers. Captain H Stanley Smith commanded one of Japan's transports in the Russo-Japanese War.

Japan Will Not Float War Loan

A private telegram from Japanese consul general Yasutaro Numano in San Francisco states that Japan will not raise a public loan to fund hostilities in the Orient. Finance Minister Wakatsuki says last three years’ residue will cover war expenses. Japan has $50,000,000 set aside from excess taxes during the Russian War era. If the Idzuma meets German cruisers Leipzig or Nürnberg, a battle could occur, potentially rewarding prizes of war.

Two Corona Mexicans Held in City Jail After Section House Disturbance

Two Corona Mexicans sleeping off the effects of too much joy water in San Bernardino yesterday caused a disturbance at the Santa Fe section house. They are employed on the section gang and will have a hearing when sober, likely tonight.
