Special to the Independent reports a more pronounced German push from St Trend to Hasele with another attack feared in northwest Brussels. Belgians fortify Namur as formidable defenses rise. French consuls in Copenhagen note missing since August 4 and believed arrested.
August 14 report says German forces halted bombardment of Liege forts on the right bank of the Meuse and redirected all efforts to the forts on the town’s west side.
A Danish steamer captain told the Chronicle that seven sunken German ships lie fifteen miles off Spurnhead near the Humber, with only masts visible above water. He believes they are German warships.
London reports describe Belgian success at Haelen with bridges over the Gette destroyed under German cavalry fire and a barricade near Diest repelling Mecklenberg dragoons. Belgian infantry inflicted heavy losses and captured enemies while only two Belgians were wounded. A Liege Belgian officer reportedly captured ten. Turkey paid 20 million dollars for Goeben and Breslau.
A Reuters dispatch from Brussels reports circulating rumors that German General von Emmich commanding the 10th Army Corps before Liege is dead. The notice notes the unconfirmed gossip as it travels through Belgian capital circles.
Report from St Petersburg states Russia has mobilized two million troops against Turkish and Roumanian fronts and kept three million in reserve.
One hundred and fifty passengers and crew of the Austrian Lloyd steamer Baron Gautro ch were drowned when that vessel was blown up by a mine off the Dalmatian coast.

Aug 14 report says German cruisers Leipzic and Nurnberg were loaded north at full speed. Vancouver claims coast defense guns are mounted there and at Victoria, BC. A separate dispatch from Port Arthur reports Canada’s wireless station wrecked and staff fired upon by two escaping men.
Panama, Aug 1. The Panama Canal will open to world traffic Saturday. Four merchant ships will enter Sunday, two from the Atlantic and two from the Pacific. The Ancon will lead, followed by the Arizonian Missourian and the Pleiades Pennsylvanian. All six will pass through in a coordinated display of canal capacity.
Riverside county highway commission orders concrete construction for 103 miles with 125000 barrels of cement at 1 34 a barrel. Contracts with Riverside Portland Cement Co. for 125000 barrels. 181 miles to use local material. Work to start by October 1 after bids tighten.

Tilson driving a Ford on Grand Boulevard collided with a runaway team near Garretson Avenue. The wagon was damaged but Tilson and the horses survived uninjured. The team, owned by J Blomberg, a junk dealer, was running north on Garretson.
Robert Strain of Fullerton transacted business in Corona today, engaging in local commerce during daytime hours. He is identified as the principal party in the brief business action reported from the city.
Ottawa Aug 14 A law to control prices of fuel and all essentials of life will be enacted by the Canadian parliament in a special war session. The statute would allow prices charged by manufacturers wholesalers and retailers to be brought before a judge and reduced by court order if war conditions are used to unduly advance prices. Since the war declaration charges for flour fuel sugar tea and many commodities have risen across Canada.
Ed Petty of Santa Ana failed to stop at Citrus and Fifth in Redlands injuring no one. His car hit J. Jo Wheat city treasurer’s vehicle, Wheat’s car pushed into Davis Donald’s car, lights damaged. All cars sustained slight damage and occupants escaped unharmed.
The dowager empress of Russia Maria Feodorovna has arrived in Berne via Paris and is reported to be seriously ill and possibly undergoing a surgical operation.
The San Berno Spprention team meets the Cement Pipe squad at Washington school grounds Sunday at 2 30. It is the first meeting of these two teams and both are fast. Local fans are urged to attend for a good crowd.
