AP science writer reports Dr. Samuel Epstein says up to 80 percent of cancers may be caused by chemicals in air water food and other exposures. He describes mouse tests showing liver and lung tumors from pollutants and pesticides including Malathion and Griseofulvin with potential human relevance.
U S and government forces clash in ten battles across South Vietnam near Saigon during the Viet Cong spring offensive. Seven Americans die, 74 wounded, with 251 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese killed. An Air Force B57 was shot down near Qui Nhon. two helicopters fell northeast of Saigon.
The nation prepares a solemn, multi day tribute for Dwight D. Eisenhower with a riderless horse and caisson procession in Washington, a rail journey to Abilene, and a devote public viewing at the Capitol. Officials describe extensive ceremonies including a 21 gun salute, a 4:30 p.m. funeral in the cathedral, and a final train departure from Union Station.
Arab states push for Big Four led peace in the Middle East. Nasser warned of explosive crisis while Jordan backed by the Soviet Union urged action. Israel denied claims of raids aiming to derail talks and urged negotiations with Arabs.
Whitley and McCreary officials join a seminar on professional competence in local government at Williamsburg through April 1. The Eastern Kentucky University political science department conducts 16 seminars for officials in 28 counties. Assistant Professor Rodger S. Gunn leads the sessions saying the program seeks to raise the quality and amount of political leadership in small cities and rural counties.
Gov. Louie B. Nunn named four Cumberland College students as Kentucky Colonels. The honorees are Roger D. Baker and Ronald G. Baker of Berea Kentucky sons of Mr. and Mrs. Warren G. Baker Earl C. Brady of Cedartown Georgia living with his grandmother Mrs Kate Chitwood and Larry Patrick of Williamsburg son of Mrs Elvin Patrick and the late Mr Patrick Certificates were presented by Whitley County Attorney Eugene Siler Jr The students participate in Cumberland Young Republicans Club.
Theatre listing for the Hippodrome shows Winnie The Pooh daily March 26 to April 1 with screenings at 1 25, 4 00, 6 30 and 9 05. The Horse in Gray Flannel Suit runs at 1 50, 4 20, 6 55 and 9 30.
Cloudy and much colder Saturday with a high around 50 cooling to about 40 in the afternoon. Tonight and Sunday will be partly cloudy and colder with lows 22 to 27 and Sunday highs 35 to 40. Monday looks fair but cold.
The Corbin Post Office will be closed on Monday for the day of mourning for former President Dwight D Eisenhower. City and rural delivery will be curtailed and the window closed, but boxholders can obtain their regular mail service.
Governor Nunn designated Monday as a state day of mourning in Kentucky. All state offices will close and flags at state facilities will fly at half staff until after the late President Eisenhower’s funeral.
Reservations for the Federated Woman's Clubs Inter Club meeting at the Holiday Inn on April 8 must be made with each club president by April 1.

Pasadena AP reports Mariner 7 and its twin Mariner 6 are en route to Mars to seek signs life could exist. A mid course maneuver will bring the probe within 2000 miles of the planet, with both crafts near Mars in August and early 1973.
