Concord player Gus known as Gus arrived home last week after playing summer baseball with the Danville nine. This marks his first venture of pre season play at Crossley home of M.
Miss Jean Denio sister of the bride served as maid of honor with bridesmaids Julie Denio and Susanne Sanders. Robert Bygrave, son of Mr and Mrs H R Bygrave, wed at St Annes Episcopal Church South Lincoln with Richard M Emrich officiating. After a reception at the bride’s home the couple plan a short trip then reside in Bloomfield New Jersey where Mr Bygrave is in business.
Concord Middlesex School plans the 1939 football season with a Saturday home opener against Boston Trade. Veteran coach Robert F. Foster leads eight returning starters including captain Jim Black at left tackle and Pete Phillips at quarterback. Russ Allen assists and backfield coach F Wolsey Pratt guides the squad.
Mr and Mrs Benjamin W Wilson of Sudbury welcome a daughter born September 17 at Emerson Hospital. Mr and Mrs Henry G Trottier of West Concord celebrate a son born September 18. Concord High School graduate James D Hawkes son of Howard Hawkes reports to Harvard freshman squad assisting Coach Albert G Cook. Hawkes class of 1939 aspires to a tackle berth for the varsity season.
Members of the Concord Garden Club toured the statue and home of Colonel Lamomi Baldwin, originator of the Baldwin Apple, in North Woburn last afternoon. Hostesses were Mrs. Herbert Hosmer and Mrs. Sidney Coolidge.
West Concord announces the engagement of Miss Theodora Blodgett of 35 Central Street to Paul Wesley Farnham of Gardner Street Allston son of Mr and Mrs Warren Farnham The couple emerge from the Blodgett and Farnham families ready for forthcoming marriage plans.
The Concord Police Relief Association plans a May 24 event at State Armory with Fred Nolan directing Ken Reeves’s 12 piece band and a featured singer. Grand march starts 3 PM, banquet at Mill Dam Tea Room at 6, with tickets on sale Sept 27 to fund aid for sick and injured officers.
This year 198 total registration for the four year classes stands at 426 pupils, down from 469 last year. The drop results from Burlington pupils not attending Concord due to a new school erected there. Freshmen entering the class of 1943 total 104.
Concord. The Junior High students elected their clubs for the coming year at a Peter Bulkeley school assembly. Clubs include Nature Handiwork Athletic Dramatic Nursing with weekly 30 minute meetings. The Walden Royal Arch Chapter held its annual business meeting at Masonic Hall Monday evening. Officers elected include Edwin Hansen as High Priest, Russell Berry as King, George Cahoon as Scribe, Warren Goddard as Secretary, and Charles Comeau as Treasurer with EB peers presiding.
The Concord Recreation Council lists seven Tuesday evening adult classes from October 10 to November 21 at the Trinitarian Congregational Parish House Walden Street. Season opens October 6 with Edward Lindeman lecturing on Adult Education.
Concord Mothers' Club met at the Trinitarian Parish House with Frances M. Andrews of the Park Institute for the Blind as guest speaker. She described children entering at age five and finishing high school, and demonstrated braille reading, shorthand, and handiwork. About 50 attended. meetings continue on the fourth Monday each month.
Mrs Leonard Smith of Cambridge Turnpike will again chair the Concord Chapter of the Red Cross. The first aid course will begin next week in the Veterans Building and is open to residents of Concord Lincoln Acton and Carlisle.
John Nee age 33, son of Mr and Mrs John M Nee of 9 Lansbrook Road, suffered a compound skull fracture a fractured left arm and multiple body injuries in an automobile upset. He is hospitalized in critical condition at West Concord hospital.
John Apthrop Harvard College's oldest living alumnus and Concord resident died suddenly Monday evening at the Colonial Inn where he lived. He was in his 96th year, celebrated his 95th birthday September 16, and had long ties to the Harvard Class of 1866. Burial at Mt Hope Cemetery, Boston, with Rev. Edward P. Daniels officiating.
Concord police arrested 19 year old Howarth White of Parnard Street Haverhill on auto larceny charges. In Concord District Court Judge Howard A Wilson set $2000 surety for the grand jury first Monday in October. White eluded pursuing officers along Maple Street until three hours later he was captured and jailed.
Miss Cynthia Hastings Houston, daughter of Mr and Mrs Francis DeHart Houston of Musketaquid road, is a freshman at the Rhode Island School of Design. Her mother graduated Beaver Country Day School and was active in dramatics art and singing with the Glee Club. Houston plans to specialize in drawing and paint after foundation courses.
A letter commends Concorde Company of the 132nd Infantry of the Massachusetts National Guard for meritorious and outstanding action. The award notes prompt actions under fire on unfamiliar terrain against a mechanized and foot enemy force, with high initiative under dangerous conditions.
Ladies singles see Foss Morse Cheney and Denio advance with scores. Cheney reaches semi after defeating Kidder. Foss beats Harris.
