By presidential direction the National Guard is to rise to 235000 enlisted men nationwide with 2100 of those added for Massachusetts. Concord unit must enroll 74 men in October. Only US citizens aged 18 to 35, unmarried, with birth proof for those under 21, and meeting physical standards are eligible. The Concord armory will host enlistments Monday and Thursday evenings in October.
In Concord District Court on Monday three cases were heard. Ralph R. Hillis of Lowell was found guilty of larceny and theft of dealer plates from William H. White Motor Co. He received a 30 day suspended sentence and two weeks to make restitution. Michael A. Butler of Brighton was convicted of driving under the influence and drunkenness, paying a total of $60 in fines after pleading not guilty. Dorchester men Henry Rooney Arthur Murphy and James Welch faced drunkenness and throwing glass charges. Rooney was acquitted of glass throwing and driving without a registration, while Murphy and Welch were found guilty of throwing glass and fined $10 each, with Murphy’s case placed on file for drunkenness. Judge Howard A. Wilson presided.

Concord James D Hawks, a Concord High School graduate now entering Harvard and listed on the freshman squad, is identified as the son of Edward A Hawke rather than Howard Hawkes, per last week's Enterprise. The Emerson Group met at Miss Camilla Moses’s home on Hubbard Street to discuss Nominalist and Idealist.
West Concord. Funeral service with a requiem high mass for John E Nee who died Friday from injuries in a Boston automobile crash. His companion Mrs Etta Mac Guire is recovering at Boston City Hospital. Nee was 34 and survived by Evelyn Nee wife, John M Nee father, William brother, two sisters, and other relatives. Burial followed at St Bridget's cemetery Maynard.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Forest Hills cemetery for J. Wellington Tracey 68 who died suddenly at his recent home 61 Lexington road. Surviving is sister Mrs. Rubie Juggins of Newton. Services were in charge of Waterman of Boston. burial was at Forest Hills cemetery.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Margaret Kelley on Laws Brook Road for Charles B. Kelley burned to death in his home on September 19. The death was ruled accidental and services were arranged. Kelley, born February 6 1901 in Hardwick, Mass, was a lifetime carpenter. Surviving: his mother Mrs. Margaret Kelley and a brother John of West Concord. Rev. Charles Russell Peck officiated. Burial was in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
Fenr Private School football coach Richard Park called out his 29 candidates led by captain Howard Walsin fullback of Concord. Veterans include end Edmund Bolton of Concord guard Edward Abbot of Westford and Worcester Meriam of Lincoln. Kenneth Reynolds of Concord will manage the team and games will be announced shortly.
Concord report shows Jack Larrabee won the boys division in the weekly Concord Recreation Council tennis event at Emerson Playground last Saturday. Madeline Foote claimed the girls division with 10 of 16 games. Charles Harwood and Robert Antognoni tied for second in the boys class with 11 of 16.
Mrs William M Shed and Alexander Cameron won the 1939 mixed doubles title at Concord Country Club defeating Mrs Charles Edgerton and Kenneth L Hayes in straight sets 6 3 11 9.
Mrs Katherine Tow Hill 69 of 20 Fairhaven road died suddenly early last Wednesday morning at home. Born in Ireland she came to this country as a small girl and settled in Concord after marriage. Surviving are her husband Frank N two daughters Katherine Mary Ma Josephine Mrs James Adm Mrs Alan Fiske and Mrs Thomas Fitzgerald Roxbury three sons Thomas Liam and Edward and six grandchildren. Funeral was a requiem high mass at St Bernard's church Saturday with Rev George F Mulcahey officiating. Burial followed in St Bernard's cemetery.
Concord The Women’s Auxiliary of the American Legion James J Manafield Post 158 names new officers for the coming year. Loretta L Frawley is first vice president with Elizabeth Connell as second and secretary Mary Flavin as treasurer. Installation set for November at the Veteran Building with Mary and Anna Flavin in charge of refreshments and entertainment.

Concord police recovered a local publisher's car in his own yard after an alleged theft from the property. The vehicle was found parked over an embankment, with the emergency brake apparently not applied, and could not be seen from the publisher's residence.
Funeral service conducted at the Funeral Home of Joseph Dee for George H. Marsh who died Thursday night at the Concord Rest Home after a long illness in his 81st year. Burial followed in Sleepy Hollow cemetery. A Concord resident for more than 40 years, Marsh was formerly a blacksmith and carriage painter with no survivors listed.

Mr and Mrs Charles F Reardon of 5 Essex Street welcomed a son born at Elmwood Hotel West Concord on September 26. Mr and Mrs Philip Dee welcomed a son Philip Jr born at Emerson Hospital on September 27.

Concord The Mill Dam Bowling League enters its second season with ten teams starting Monday night at the McManus alleys. League president David Williams reports strong turnout and rising competition. Local politics and events were highlighted as Otis Whitney Henry Parkman and John Wroe spoke at Republican gatherings in Lexington. Concord sent a large delegation to the Hudson home coming for U S Senator Wheeler with the Concord Legion band under Edward Kelley performing amid rain. Special to this paper Secretary of State Frederic W Cook reports a birth rate rise in Hudson and statewide figures for 1938. Births increased from 107 in 1937 to 116 in 1938 with 139 in 1937 rising to 141 in 1938, and males outnumbering females by about 1,043 to 1,000. Local communities show varied 1937 and 1938 totals including Concord Marlboro and Sudbury.
Concord unaffected by October first gas rate changes in Greater Boston territory as Boston Consolidated Gas Co. is directed by November 1 to bring Concord District rates in line with the new schedule.
