Sunday church appeals urged buying the second series of Liberty bonds. Many local residents were entertaining guests, traveling, or attending events as the community noted members serving in the armed forces and preparing for wartime needs.

Notable wedding of Miss Anna Distasio daughter of Mrs. Maria Distasio and John L Capozzoli son of Mr. and Mrs. Carmelo Capozzoli took place Sunday at St Bridget's church. Rev John J McHugh officiated. Attendant Miss Josephine Distasio, best man James Bigio. Bride wore white charmeuse with silver lace, veil of tulle, bouquet of pink roses. After reception at the bride’s home they left for a wedding trip and will live in Medford. She has worked as bookkeeper for A Distasio market. Capozzoli is an Boston attorney.
A Concord recruit told the doctor that Europe would become very hot for the Kaiser, hinting at future danger and conflict as he prepared for overseas service.
Chief Frank S. Binks led a Saturday raid on three places including the Maynard house, a Summer street barber shop, and George Theodore’s fruit store at Summer and Nason. Only the fruit store yielded liquor, with clerk Nick Deleanes admitting ownership. he was fined $50 in Concord district court.
Bronze medals were awarded to Boy Scouts who sold bonds to 10 or more families during the first Liberty loan drive at the post office square. Troops 1 and 3, led by Scoutmasters George Cuttell and Percy Robinson, received honors as Representative Rowland P. Harriman presented the medals and each scout with a pamphlet on Our Flag.
A 1917 letter by WM. C. Kenyon from Maynard masses social shame and local scorn over Liberty Bond purchases. The piece paints a Marlboro man dragged from home and dumped in a pond, a Hudson man failing the draft, and a Stow elder promising ham to soldiers if they return. It accuses a Maynard man of assault after bond pressure and notes a Maynard brunette’s threat to a Sudbury farmer if bonds aren’t bought.
At Co operative hall a small turnout discussed town laborer wages. The finance committee urged annulling the $2.50 rate and leaving the decision to the selectmen. The motion passed unanimously. Last week the street department wage rose to $3 per day and the board will set that rate permanently, per Chairman Frank Binks.

John Butterworth of Concord Junction died at his home last night. He is survived by a daughter Mrs. Chas Whitman and a grandson Walter Whitman of this town.

Ladies auxiliary of A O H conducted a well attended whist party at Masonic hall on Monday evening. Proceeds went to Soldiers Relief fund. Prizes awarded to Susie Sheehan, Mary Mullaney, Patrick McGrath, Patrick McPhillip, Bernard Garrigan. Refreshments followed. committee listed with members from Maynard South Acton and Concord.

The Middlesex Union Association of Congregational Churches held its 87th annual meeting at Union Congregational Church. William McLane presided as moderator with Rev. John B. Lewis as scribe and treasurer. Morning sessions featured prayers, reports, and addresses by Rev. G. M. Missirian on The Churches of the East and the War and Rev. J. J. Walker on The Churches of Massachusetts. Afternoon programs included Devotional service by Rev. H. Stone, a business meeting, and talks by Capt. Daniel S. Mackay and Rev. G. Ernest Merriam on The Church and the Soldier and The Church Under Authority. Dinner was served in the vestry.
The Harvest Fair Saturday afternoon and evening at the St George parish hall drew strong participation from the Gins Friendly Society. Young ladies decorated booths and ran features including fancy articles, homemade candy, fortune telling and a mystery table. Refreshments were served gratis by a committee chaired by Mrs Elizabeth Wilson.
The Middlesex Pomona fifth degree will be conferred for a class in Maynard this May. A meeting was held at Acton Center last Thursday and applications were received. Local attendees included Irwin Howe and Mrs. Gilbert M. Hawkes.
Vesper service at the Congregational church Sunday evening featured a duet by Miss Ethel Son and Mrs. Robert Archer. The service drew a large young crowd and the chosen hour proved convenient for the general public.
Town Treasurer George H. Gutteridge sold 45000 dollars of Nason Street school bonds at 4 percent. The issue includes 2000 dollar serials payable annually from 1918 to 1932 and 2000 dollars annually from 1933 to 1937. Sold to E H Rolls & Sons Boston for 101227 dollars. other buyers included Harris Forbes Co and Blodgett & Co at 100.53.
About 36 members of the Union Congregational church Senior C H society attended a meeting of a similar society in Concord Junction. Sunday night services were held with Leslie Wells Pollock, Pollock county secretary of the C E society, as speaker.
Col. Prank A. Pope of Camp Owens was the weekend guest of Mr. and Mrs. O. Fowler.
At the Maynard Grange meeting on October 30 a class of 24 candidates will receive the first and second degrees. The session starts at 7 30 p m and will be followed by the annual Halloween party.
The G F B girls of the Episcopal church plan a Halloween party in the church basement Thursday evening the 25th at 8 oclock. The hall will be decorated with autumn leaves pine boughs and yellow crepe paper. A supper will be served.
Misses Annie and Edith Garlick and Mary and Margaret Dunn attended the Friday evening performance of Turn to the Right at the Tremont Theatre in St. Louis.
