John Otho Staples a railroad man aged 79 died at his home 104 Commonwealth avenue West Concord after a two week illness on Tuesday October 15. He was born May 16 1866 in North Belgrade Maine son of George and Martha Staples. He married Mary Nicholson about forty three years ago. Funeral services were conducted by Rev Howard C Whitcomb at the West Somerville Baptist Church with pallbearers George Kenney Charles Kenney Samuel Hodgkins and Arthur McGilvary. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery Westford. He is survived by his wife three sons Warren D Staples of Barre VT John Everett Staples of Somerville and Howard R Staples of West Concord four grandchildren a sister Mrs Augusta Wedge of Los Angeles and a brother Herbert Staples of Boston.
The Concord Garden Club gathered Wednesday at Mrs. Charles W. Farnsworth’s residence for its annual meeting with Mrs. Edwin D. Brooks assisting. Retiring president Mrs. Robert Bowen passed leadership to new officers: President Mrs. Frederick Ye, Vice President Mrs. Herbert B Hosmer, Recording Secretary Mrs. G. A. Hill, Corresponding Secretary Mrs. Richard B. Hobart, Treasurer Mrs. R. H. Hatep. Executive Committee members include Mrs. Jonn Bordman, Mrs. Henry Brooks, Miss Edith Eaton, Mrs. William Buttrick, and Mrs. Walter K. Shaw.
Preparations are under way for a Hallowe en Party in the Veterans Building on Thursday evening October 21. The James J Mansfield Post and the Concord Legion band sponsor the event with free admission for all children and entertainment to be provided.
Mrs Josephine McParland Maker widow of Lewis A Maker died Wednesday night at the home of her daughter Mrs Josephine H Tracey in West Concord after a long illness. Born in Belfast Maine on March 7 1961 she was daughter of Nath aniel H and M Thompson McParland. Funeral held at home conducted by Rev Alfred W Stone burial in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. Survived by brother Daniel McFarland of Maine daughters Mrs Josephine H Tracey and Ms Adelia Hedberg seven grandchildren six great grandchildren.
Maynard Paul Allen won the President's Cup in a field of 31 at Maynard Country Club with a scorecard of 78-14-64. Henry Weir was runner up with 81-15-66 as others posted scores including Johnston 80-11-69 Newport 87-18-69 Morton 91-11-70 Wasuik 80-9-71 Tapply 8746-72 and Bullard 87-15-72. The season concluded and warm weather boosted local rink play.

Springfield DeMolay conclave ran Friday to Sunday with A Frank Croft invested with the Legion of Honor degree. Marian Whitney retired noble grand received a collar and jewel. Abbie Isner received gifts and flowers. A public whist event is planned at 7 o'clock on Nov. 7 in the same hall.
A Maynard A meeting of the Junior Democratic Crusaders of Middlesex County filled the Young Citizens Club quarters Sunday afternoon. Speakers included Charles McGlue Boston Attorney John Driscoll Maynard candidate for Representative in the 10th Middlesex district John H McAuliffe Lawrence P Gerard Cahill Waltham Selectman Anthony O Malley Hudson Miss Mary Wetherbee Miss Margaret Shea Raymond LaFleur Stow and Fred Bleon Maynard. Boxboro delegation announced a Hallowe en party at the new town hall on Oct 31. Maynard Crusaders invited to an Essex County gathering in Lynn next Sunday.
Maynard High School 1929 class holds its second annual reunion at Grange Hall this Saturday evening. The program features games dancing and a supper with Halloween touches and plenty of laughter. Transportation will be provided for members needing a ride. Committee members are Waine Sjoblom Alice Donahue Irma Wirta Al Connors George Brayden and Ruth Bradley.
Mary Leighton of Concord sends a 1000 dollar Liberty Bond to the Town of Concord as a memorial to Colonel James Barrett. The bond's interest is to be kept for sixty year periods with distributions by the town and, if Concord becomes a city, the use of earnings designated by the Aldermen.
A Sudbury Woman's Club guest night drew many friends from surrounding towns to the Town Hall. The event featured an entertaining program and included Maynard Road resident and naval serviceman visiting with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gleason.
A wildfire blackened several hundred acres of woodland beginning Thursday afternoon in Concord and crossing into Bedford. Concord Bedford and Lincoln fire units fought the blaze most of the day and state forest fire crews assisted along with 150 COC volunteers from Andover. A night detail remained to watch for flare ups.
Mrs. Laura Bower of Maynard aged 91 died as warm weather faded, a long resident of Maynard for nearly fifty years. Born in Ruddersfield England she entertained at Grange programs and remained active in her garden and community. Survived by four children George Bower of Braintree Mrs Smallwood of Trenton NJ Mrs Robert Marsden and Phillip Bower of Maynard.
