Various church, civic, and war-related items and voter registration figures included.
The Concord based MWD C unit led by Captain Dorothy Macone paraded in Boston on Sunday October 14 with units from across the state invited to HQ after the parade for open house and a buffet lunch. Due to a Monday holiday, state guard drilled Tuesday and MWD C held classes at the Veterans Building with Mrney Pratt teaching first aid and Corporal Margaret Lothrop leading litter drill. A new course is under way.
Concord plans standard first aid courses on Monday evenings and advanced classes on Tuesday evenings through winter. Advanced classes began last Tuesday at Peter Bulkeley School auditorium and Harvey Wheeler building with Ralph Verrill and Robert Carson as instructors. Enrollment is open up to 25 per class, with notices to RSVP to Roger C. Fenn, and no-shows may still attend if space allows.
John Roche died Monday noon at Hogan's Spa in West Concord after a period of illness. A World War I veteran and long time instructor, he was pronounced dead by Dr. John J. Berger. The body was sent to Joseph Dee & Sons Funeral Home for arrangements.
The Concord Lions Club held its 26th bi monthly session at Old Mill Dam Tea Room October 15 with about 25 attendees. Honor gifts were given to Rev Wilfrid H Bunker and Thomas B Lindsay for leaving to serve in Colorado and abroad. H Paul Larrabee spoke as superintendent of Concord schools. Next meeting set for October 27. Miss Rosamond Brooks aids Boston play benefiting servicemen.

A high mass of requiem was sung at St Bernard church for Fred W. Mason 78 retired carpenter and farm manager who died Wednesday October 14 in Worcester. Burial followed at St Bernard's cemetery. A Maine native he had lived in Concord over 50 years and resided recently at the Concord Home 54 Walden street. He leaves no immediate survivors.
Concord ceremony last Saturday at the First Parish Unitarian Church united Miss Joan Miller daughter of Mr and Mrs Hans W Miller of Concord with Lieutenant Kendrick Anderson Sparrow son of Mr and Mrs Aradah L Sparrow of Orleans on active U S Navy duty. The couple planned a quiet reception at the Miller home and an unannounced wedding trip.
Middlesex School was shut out 13 0 by Groton Academy at Concord Private School Field. Groton scored on a Statue of Liberty play early in the second quarter as Gil Low tossed the key pass to Fairfield Coogan who sprinted 46 yards for the TD. Tim West added a late score and Bob Robb converted the point. Middlesex threatened but fumbled twice in the third period and could not finish drives.
West Concord mourns Thomas A. Clarke 71 of 422 Misin Street died February 14 after illness. Funeral Mass at Our Lady Help of Christians West Concord celebrated by Rev George Ey erard with Rev Thomas Lynch and Rev George Mulcahy assisting. Burial at St Bernard's Cemetery. Clarke survived by wife Bridget, two daughters Mary B and Alice Graham, a son Thomas Jr in New York, two grandchildren, and two sisters in Ireland. He worked 10 years at Concord Municipal Light Plant and 30 years at Boston Harness Company West Concord before retirement.
The service for John Francis Donovan 68 was held at his Riverside Ave residence. Rev Kenneth R Teed officiated and burial was in Glenwood cemetery Maynard. Concord Odd Fellows members conducted grave services and bearers included Walter Burrill Harry Parker and others. Donovan a former town house caretaker and night baker died after a car crash near Maine and Highland streets. He was born December 25 1873 in Worcester and lived in West Concord over 40 years. He left a widow Hattie Blanche Billington who died last January and a daughter Grace Buckley.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the late home of Miss Fanny Ames Scripture in Bedford Road Lincoln. Rev. Charles Styron conducted the simple service for the 93 year old resident who passed away last Saturday night. She lived with her two nieces Mary and Bertha Scripture and had been a Lincoln resident for 19 years and was known in Concord.
Funeral services were held last Wednesday for Elizabeth Schulkin nee Elizabeth on Schulkin who died Sunday October in Concord. Local authorities and family described her as a devoted figure in the community.
West Concord Cambridge-born Reformatory officer Thomas Edo ward Frawley 71 died October 14 after a two month illness. A high mass was conducted at Our Lady Help of Christians with burial at St. Bernard's cemetery. He leaves a wife four sons and three daughters with eight grandchildren. flags flew at half staff for 32 years of service including 26 years at the trade school.
Concord Evangelical Free Church hosts a three day Missionary Conference October 21 23 with speakers from India Africa and Scandinavia. Miss Jean Lybart Rev Christiansen Rev Stuart ane and Rev M D Christiansen will address attendees and share experiences from their fields.
The Concord high school girls field hockey team opened the season with a 5-1 win at Emerson playground over Acton. Captain Marian Finelehto scored Acton’s lone goal as Concord built a four-goal lead in the first half with goals from Doris Gerow Barbara Hughes Diana Scuphin and Mary Richardson. The Concord seconds also won 2-0 behind Kathleeh Dee who scored twice.
Fred T. Boyd of Lowell Road, a club member, was guest speaker at the 469th luncheon meeting held at the Colonial Inn. President Floyd Verrill led the business session as guests were introduced. The group noted an event by Micott and His Vieiin TM to be held at the Veterans on November 6. Polling hours for the state election are set from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Death polling Discos.
Concord’s scrap drive far exceeded its quota with more than 125 tons collected locally. Farms’ crops delayed harvests, with an estimated 300 to 500 tons to be salvaged from 200+ farms next month. Boy and Girl Scouts helped, and the drive featured parades and a “Junk Rally Week” bonfire of pages and effigies.
The Deacs Home for Aged on Nine Acre Corner Road plans a House Birthday Party replacing its usual event due to transport issues. From 2 to 6 PM on October 31, Superintendent Mrs Rowena Lombard and Home Committee members from Belmont Newton Highlands and Boston will greet guests. Willow Rebekah Lodge hosted a Halloween party at Oda Fellows Hall West Concord with new noble grand Mrs Hortense G Locke presiding.
