A Maynard town meeting at Cooper Gove hall with over 200 attendees voted to buy the Assabet House for town use at 3000 dollars plus 690 dollars in 1934 taxes. The town will issue notes not to exceed 2100 dollars payable over six years funded by water supply taxes and overseen by the Selectmen and town treasurer. A seven member committee was appointed to study electric rates and municipal light plant viability. Other articles were laid on the table or passed over.
In West Concord Odd Fellows hall the Willow Rebekuon Lodge installed its new corps of officers led by District President Mrs. Esie Waterman. A supper was served by Frank C. Leighton’s committee. Officers inducted included Noble Grand Mrs Marion S Whitney and Vice Grand Mrs Luella Huntoon along with several P. N. G. and D. G. officers.
Thomas F. Parker relocates his hardware business from Main street to a store on Nason street after 42 years serving Maynard. He is among the town’s longest standing merchants, alongside William B. Case and P. J. Sullivan. Johnson Pharmacy, one of Maynard’s oldest institutions, began with Benjamin Johnson and continues under manager Charles Warren.
Funeral services for Patrick E Hagerty an elder native of the town were held Wednesday morning at the residence of his sister Mrs Joan Hutchinson on Fairhaven Road A high mass of requiem was celebrated in St Bernard s church by Rev William H Finney or the parish rector was not present in this excerpt
Sunbury residents show strong interest in Florence Armes Hosmer oil portraits. Hosmer, longtime Sunbury art teacher, now exhibits at Boston City Club gallery. Her family has lived in Sunbury over 36 years and she owns a brick house in Centre Square.
The funeral for August Silvonen of 25 Main Street was held Saturday afternoon at WA Twombly officiated by Jacob Rinta pastor of the Finnish Congregational church. Burial followed in Glenwood cemetery after he fell from a window at his home and died at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Three town teachers clubs Hudson Marlboro and Maynard hosted a joint outing at Stow Club inviting Berlin Bolton Gleasondale and other area schools officials attended. Highlights included vocal duets piano solos golf winners and a newspaper skit with Le Mullen as master of ceremonies.
Concord Wor. Harold Dale presided at a reception for District Deputy Grand Master of the Twelfth Masonic Die in at the lodge hall. Distinguishing Masons attended including Wor. Eugene C Vining, Wor. Andrew G Jenkins, and Wor. William J Graham. War. Herbert W Hosmer, age 80, received ovation for 54 years as a Mason.
Mr and Mrs R Norman Huda peth return from Europe with watercolors of southern Europe and other works from Concord artists Russell Smith Thomas Wood and Mary James. Mrs Peter Whyte displays two new pieces and Mr Kettell continues his etchings through October.
The Concord U ES Concord Hawthorne Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star met at the Masonic Temple in Concord with Mrs. Cora M. MacLeod presiding and Theodore Heyliger assisting. At the next gathering on November 14 they will honor Past Matrons and Past Patrons. A novelty whist party followed with fifteen tables. prizes went to Gertrude H. Pearce and Eleanor Clubb Lawrence for ladies and to Arthur Fraser and Frank A. Cleaves for men, with consolation prizes to Florence E. Pilling and George W. Blake. Refreshments were served under Elizabeth M. Jenness.
In St Casimir's church Maynard, Miss Mary Derkas daughter of te Derkas Pleasant Street and Alexander Walter Kulevich son of Mr and Mrs John Kulevich Pleasant Street wed after a solemn high mass. The ceremony drew relatives and friends from Worcester Boston Cambridge Providence and other cities. The bride wore French lace and a tulle train. the groom is a Maynard High School graduate and Beacon Shoe Shoppe proprietor. The couple plan to live on Pleasant Street after a reception at St Casimir's hall with music by Anthony Ratyna.
The Emergency Nursery School at Roosevelt school is now open under expert direction. Children from MRA garden grown produce are canned in the administration project facility. A rest room with cots is provided. Visiting hours are Thursdays from 2 30 p m to 3 30 p m.
A break-in at Maynard Store on Nason Street occurred last night via the cellar. Items of merchandise were disturbed during the incident.
The town remembers Mr. Pierce who walked to his Old Mill Dam store until retirement after 69 years in Concord life. He was the sole surviving old time storekeeper from Civil War days and served customers who included notable locals in literature and philosophy. He sold shoes to soldiers of Civil War, Spanish-American War, and World War I.
Tonight is the final chance to register for the state election as Registrars of Voters operate from noon to 10 pm. Voters turning 18 by election day may also register today. About 70 new voters were added in two sessions and a strong turnout is anticipated in the 10th Middlesex district with several names listed as new entrants at multiple streets and avenues.
The annual Colum bus Day event hosted by Roma Lodge Sons of Italy drew a large crowd for social activities. A parade led by the Rossini Band from Na tick opened the day, followed by a Parker street hall concert and speeches by a grand lodge representative and local officials. Dancing closed the program with noted community figures in attendance.
Vladimir Mikitiuk a 58 year old resident of Maynard born in Russia died Sunday night. Funeral from the Batulin home 17 Railroad street followed by services at St. Mary’s Russian Orthodox church conducted by Rev. Sergus Basilevitch. Burial was in Glenwood cemetery.
Major C. Sidney Coulter U.S. Army has retired and settled in South Acton. He served as a first division officer in the AEF, landed in France with the advance guard, and concluded his career in Panama and Honolulu. Old residents welcome him back at 53. Concord also honors Rev. Fr. White, national Legion chaplain, at the James J Mansfield Post installation, with a large ceremony and dinner.
The Wednesday game on Pearl Street will see Maynard defending its 6-0 last year win as both teams seek a thrilling battle. Coach Ruth Finn leads her eleven while Ken Johnston adds Concord to the schedule for November 16 at the Concord play grounds.
D. H. Bezanson of West Acton died at his home after a long illness in his eightieth year. Born in Windsor Nova Scotia on May 3 1855 he moved to this town 55 years ago and worked at Hall Brothers mill. He married Ida Foote in 1888 and is survived by four daughters seven grandchildren and two daughters in law. Funeral services were held at the family home Sunday conducted by Rev Arthur Jeffries of the Wes Acton Baptist Church.
Charles Arnold, son of Mrs. Mary A. Whitman of 14 Lincoln Street, died Sunday night at the Massachusetts General Hospital at age 56. Born in Maynard, he had lived in West Concord since childhood with his brother Walter Whitman and his grandparents the late Mr and Mrs John Butterworth. Rev. Fred W. Stone led the Union Church service. Burial followed at Glenwood Cemetery in Maynard.
