Local residents attend visits and gatherings as town notes include plans for winter, school observances for Columbus Day, and a variety of community activities. Public cups removed from halls, road work completed on East Summer Street, and a range of social events and political conventions are reported alongside moves in employment and local businesses.
Local social life includes visits by Mrs. Robert Brown of Fitchburg to her mother Mrs. Frank Ring, a whist party by Adelbert Me and Edwin Bayley’s senator nomination banquet. Bachelors Girls club plans a social dance in Association hall. Work on a new reinforced concrete railroad bridge proceeds toward completion before cold weather.
Dc J Lynch of Maynard Mass argues for direct nominations to weaken political boss control over conventions. He cites campaign funds and machine candidates as the problem and promotes reform to give voters a clearer choice.
New management takes over Old Wrights Tavern in Concord with focus on automobile clubs and banquets. Moderate boarder rates and emphasis on service announced by Charles Wellsman.
The Sudbury column reports Mrs Frank Perkins entertaining a relative from Billerica and Fred Raymond moving to Cambridge. D W Dean is drawn for jury duty and Shirley Smith installs electric lights at F P W Goodnow’s residence. Miss Emma Haneen visits, two Sudbury ladies train as nurses at Mass General, and Lorouga Grange opens fall with plans for a harvest supper at Memorial church led by the Ladies Benevolent Society.
In Bedford and nearby towns, BLDFORD 8 W Young attended his sister's funeral in Haverhill. Fall and Winter millinery advertised by Helen Smith Young on Springs Road. Charles W. Blake joined the new Republican town committee, traveling to Reading to witness F. P. Bennett's nomination. A $1000 offer for a pair of blacks was refused by John & Young of York Beach. Louis Pfeiffer attended the Reading senatorial convention and was noted as a delegate from a previous Bedford caucus. A typographical correction: C A Blake vote should read C A Burke one vote for the Republican town committee.
The October P T A meeting at the school house on Thursday October 20 at 3 30 pm will feature Carolyn Tuthem Webber speaking on Food in the Home and School Lunches. Discussion includes serving hot cocoa at noon for children who bring lunches and the PTA may trial the plan.
