Thomas J. McGrath Jr of 23 Davis Court signs with Northeast Airlines for flight and navigation instruction before entering air transport command. He reports October 5 in Burlington Vermont for four weeks of preliminaries, then eight weeks at Presque Isle Maine before active service. McGrath is a Concord High School graduate, attended Boston College, and holds a private pilot license.
The Helping Hand society of the West Concord Union Church hosts a Thursday Silver Tea at Mrs. Martin Hosem’s home 5 Grove Street West Concord. Proceeds go toward paying for the stoker.
Paul Vincent Moynihan of 2 Brooks Street son of Mr and Mrs Timothy Frank Moynihan reported for duty in the U S Coast Guard on Monday. He is described as a former high school athlete.

Word arrives that local attorney Thomas J. Hayes of 46 Walden Street, who recently joined the army, has been transferred to a military base in Washington.

Michael J Battles 84 of 7 Brooks Street Concord died last Saturday at Emerson Hospital after a short illness He was born in Concord and lived here all his life A retired stable manager for 88 years he ran the McManus stable in Concord Miss Mary A Battles his sole survivor lived with him Funeral services were held from his home Tuesday morning followed by a high mass at St Bernard s Church at 9 and burial in St Bernard s Cemetery
Concord remembers Mrs Frances Irene Duprey Fraser age 70 lifelong resident who died Sunday morning. Rev Kenneth Teed presided over Tuesday at her home 237 Main Street burial Sleepy Hollow cemetery. Born July 12 1872 she would have marked 50 years of marriage in November. Survived by husband Lewis Porter Fraser and daughter Miss Mary M Fraser.
Concord Preston Earl Johnson and Mrs. Randi Johnson quietly celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary at their Lowell road home. They wed in Dennisport on September 26, 1922, with Rev. George O Richardson officiating. Their daughter Helen Wilkie lives in Waltham. Mr. Johnson works as a marine engineer.
Middlesex School launches its 1942 slate with a Saturday afternoon home game against Boston Trade at 2 30. Captain Gordon Grant and four other veterans lead a green team under coach Foster assisted by F Woolsey Pratt and ex Harvard star William LaCroix. The tentative away games include Gov Dummer Groton St Marks Noble Greenough St George's with travel issues noted.
Concord wardens firemen mounted patrol and other members are urged to attend a Tuesday October 6 lecture at 8 o clock at the Veterans local. The program will feature colored motion pictures illustrating the topic.
Victoria M Orpik daughter of Victor Orpik and Philip Gray son of Mrs Raymond Gray were married last Saturday at West Concord Union Church at 430 PM. The bride’s sister served as maid of honor and Joseph O wik, brother of the bride, was best man. After a wedding trip the couple will reside at the groom’s home. The bride is a Concord High School graduate and the groom a Medford High School alum employed by a Boston firm.
Jesuit trainees from Weston College volunteer weekly to help farmers harvest crops that would have been wasted. At Kenney Farm on Virginia Road groups of 20 to 60 work three days a week diggin g beets parsnips celery and other tasks under guidance of Rev. Robert Hewitt and Rev. Robert Carr. Other farms assisted include Wilson Farm in Lincoln Middleton's in Acton Jenks in West Acton and Thomas J McGrath's potato farm on Barretts Mill road Concord.
At a Concord tea, Mr and Mrs Hans William Miller announce the engagement of their daughter Joan Miller to Lt Kendrick Anderson Sparrow USNR son of Mr and Mrs Arahah L Sparrow of Orleans Miss Miller a 1938 Emma Willard graduate attended Wellesley and Vesper George School of Art She is granddaughter of the late Mr and Mrs Clarence H Blackall of Cambridge Sparrow a University of Maine 1935 and University of Virginia Law School 1938 graduate taught Phi Delta Phi Libel Show music He will be married in Getheher.

Concord council Knights of Columbus held a well attended penny sale at Monument hall to raise funds for Christmas presents for Council members in the armed forces. About 160 people attended and 85 prizes were awarded with Mrs. Michael Burke winning a turkey dinner and James P. Sheehan taking a chicken prize.
Firefighters from Concord Central station battled a two hour blaze early Saturday at the home of Ralph B. Peterson 16 Everett Street with smoke and flames reaching rafters in the attic bedroom It displaced the Petersons and the McAdoo family occupants were forced out in night clothing Chief Harry E Tuttle reported about 3000 dollars in damage and flames were fed by smouldering cigarette remnants.
The Concord Unit of the M. W. D. C. held a regular drill at the Armory on Tuesday evening September 22 under Captain Dorothy Macone. Capt Burleigh Pratt Sgt Archie Bowie and Captain Macone praised the adeptness of the regulars and the promising recruits. Training included Mobile Casualty Litter Drill and Regulation and Emergency Equipment for Convoy with Home of Motor Transport. The Concord Lions Club held its first anniversary meeting on Tuesday September 22 at the Old Mill Dam Tea Room with a Ladies Night program attended by about 50 Lions and Lionesses. Frederick R. Child Jr. served turkey dinner as the club announced plans to send magazines to the Concord Company with the 4.E.F. in the South Pacific. Lion Edmund H. Campbell was noted as the first member to enter service, recently commissioned a first lieutenant and departing for duty.
Concord Old Concord Chapter D A R holds its 1942 48 season opener on Saturday October 3 at the Chapter House with guest speaker State Regent Mrs Frederick Glazier Smith discussing the 1942 Continental Congress in Chicago Delegates reports from Swampscott October 1 2 andState Treasurer Mrs Henry J Winslow also attends Music by Mrs Wallace B Conant and Mrs George R Blvin with Bedford members as hostesses.
Concord High School coach Miriam C. Clark leads about 30 candidates for the girls field hockey squad. The season opens Friday with a game at Belmont, Hills captains the team, Dorothy Gerow is the only other veteran, and several members of last year's second team join the varsity. Schedule games with Lexington Acton and Arlington are being arranged.

Concord coach Bernie Megin’s gridsters lost 7 0 to Prichard High of North Andover in a punting duel at Emerson playground. A first period touchdown by Buntin and Craig’s pass extra point gave Prichard the lead as Concord failed to dent the heavier eleven.
Both the famous Concord Lout La May Alcott Home and the Concord Antiquarian Society on Lexington Road shut for the season six weeks early due to a gasoline shortage. Allen French, president, led the closures.
