Charles Coulter a retired officer and active Legion organizer received a letter of commendation. He served as parade marshal for the 200th anniversary and led town activities.
Concord Armistice Day program featured Rt. War Garfield A Davs district deputy grand master of the Jeth sa sonic District visiting Corinthian Lodge A F and A M in the Masonic temple. A large suite of distinguished Masons attended headed by Wor Willard A Parker deputy grand marshal and Wor Ralph P Coates deputy grand secretary among others. Wells A Hall chaired the reception. A supper preceded the meeting and a visiting clergyman from California gave an inspiring address.
The White Cross Guild convened its season opener at St Bridget’s Church with Mrs A A Hilferty presiding. Plans include a Christmas donation day for clothing food and money with baskets, date to be announced. The group has two decades of welfare work and honored the late Miss Lucy Ward for a $1000 bequest.
The West Acton Woman's Club presents Ballots for Bill at the Club House on Thursday and Friday evenings. Mrs L A Sebastian coaches the group and guides a performance featuring rare Richard.
A Woman's Club meeting featured a lecture about Otis Barton and his bathysphere dive to 500 fathoms beneath the ocean. The speaker noted some photographs were staged in a film style while recalling Barton's Concord public school days. The event drew scientific interest amid music and refreshments.
The Middlesex Institution for Savings of Concord and the Maynard Trust Company plan Christmas distributions totaling about 62000. Maynard Trust will mail checks around December 1 totaling 36000, up 11000 from last year. Middlesex Institution will distribute about 26000, up 600, with checks sent November 26.
Maynard Summer Hill Lodge Ancient Order of United Workmen held a Thursday night meeting at Odd Fellows hall for officer installation. Samuel Wilson of Marlboro, district deputy, led the ceremonies with inductees including John Maley, Benjamin C. Brown, Landenstein, Mary Cahoon, Charlee E Tae bull, Mary A. Flannery, Victoria Miceli, Simeon Christian, Alfred Carey, Fred Tro ise, Mary Bastinelli and others for the coming year.
All Sudbury names will unite for a Thanksgiving service next Sunday at the Metho sie venue. Sermon by H. Clark. Everybody is invited to attend.
The event featured Mrs Chandler assisted by Genevieve E Chisholm Margaret Gates Bya Marye Bertha Carmichael Austin D MacRae and William E Graham as deputies. Initiation ceremonies impressed observers with dignity grandeur and smooth precision. Caroline Derby provided solos and Ruth A Pratt accompanied at the piano.
Bedford Grange won first prize in a competitive entertainment with Lincoln Grange at Maynard Grange annual sale held Thursday night at Grange hall. Alan Palmer sang, Marion Jones accompanied, booths by Eva Smith Esther Sims Grace Bourke Grace Tucker, directed by Mrs. Adelaide Sims. Ina Edwards won a door prize. Maynard Grange officers to be elected November 26.
Acton Club welcomed about fifty members of West Acton Woman's Club as guests at its regular meeting last Wednesday, November 13. Mrs Walter T Stanton of Stow, district director, was a special guest. The event featured an illustrated message of welcome and showcase educational pictures. It proved to be among the outstanding educational programs and was both entertaining and profitable.
A. Coughlin BRA administrator says WPA has approved extensions for Glenwood Cemetery and a wood working project at the town farm. Control is expected to shift by December 1 with price supervision moving to the sponsoring town department.
Sunday afternoon in the United Cooperative building a joint installation of post officers took place under the charge of past county commander Walter Bur dette of Somerville. George Cutus was named new commander and presided as officers installed included Ernest Johnson senior commander William McCarthy junior vice commander John Peterson adjutant and others. Mary Wright retired president received a past commander's badge and past president pin.
The United Cooperative annual entertainment returns Sunday November 24 at Parker Street Hall starting 7 o clock. Public admission is free with welcoming remarks by Charles W Manty and guest speaker Dwight Davis principal of Orange High School. The program features piano solo by Mrs. Robert Madsen vocal solo by Alan Palmer a juvenile gong and dance revue by Charlotte Sommerville and pupils and accordion selections by Stella and Mary Rubaske.
St. Bridget's parish will hold its annual reunion at Cooperative hall on Wednesday November 27. The event includes whist entertainment and dancing. A parish committee meeting is scheduled for tomorrow at 7 30 pm at the church. Children of Mary Society met Monday night and Junior Holy Name Society will meet tonight at 6 30. Men of the parish plan a heano party at Cooperative hall Friday night. Rev James P Sherry spoke at the Holy Name Society Sunday evening.
Framingham hosts returning pianist Maynard Nicholson and Alta Lena Nicholson as they bring a duo concert. The performers are well known in the area and promise a program blending classical selections with contemporary works.
Funeral services were held for Thomas McPhillips longtime Concord Tree Department head and moth suppression agent who died after being struck on the new Concord superhighway near the Sudbury River. The service at St Bernard's Church included a High Mass of Requiem, with pallbearers drawn from his tree department circle. McPhillips born in 1885 in Ireland came to the U S in 1907 and married Jennie Ashmore in 1912. He is survived by his wife seven children and four brothers. The burial occurred at St Bernards cemetery following a hospital death from a fractured skull and leg injuries.
The incident occurred while a man and his 16 year old son William were hunting in the woods with his brother Charles. The son aided by walking toward St. John’s Hospital in Lowell to seek medical help after the injury to his ankle.
A Universalist afternoon social and financial effort attracted many attendees showing a festive display in Autumn colors. Tables were staffed by aprons led by Mrs Wal Lewis and Mrs Winnifred Wells chaired the arrangement with assistants named.
At a DeMolay Parent's Night at L. D. Wilson Chapter in Masonic hall, a disarmament debate featured Rev. Matthew A Vance affirming that the United States should lead in disarmament. Major Charles Coulter argued the negative, with speakers stressing peace, antiwar sentiment, and America's leadership role.
