The Maynard team defeated Marlboro 7 0 after Ed Flaherty broke through for a late score set by a major punt return by Downey. Downey also long returned and sparked Maynard with strong line play and a series of first downs in the second half.
Miss Mary Agnes Murphy daughter of Mr and Mrs Richard J Murphy of 32 Parker street married Arthur E Cusson son of Mrs Daisy Cusson of 210 Lincoln Street Marlboro in a church ceremony. Bride wore apricot velvet with turban and silver accessories. They later entertained at the bride’s home with guests from New York Pennsylvania and New Hampshire. The bride a Maynard High School graduate and the groom a Marlboro area native employed by Jay Shoe company plan to reside at 31 Church street Marlboro after a wedding trip to New York. Gifts were numerous and beautiful.
The annual Wasaar of St George's Church at Cooperative Hall on Friday and Saturday drew a large attendance. An amateur night opened with Mildred Hilly winning first prize five dollars with Grace Stokes. second prize three dollars went to Charles Fouratt and Billy Lesage. Third prize one and a half dollars awarded to Chester Carson. Saturday featured music and dancing directed by Mrs Walter Olsen with various church groups staffing booths, food, and fellowship activities.
A Thursday evening gathering is announced for November 14 at 6 30 under the Ladiew William Missionary organization with Mrs H Butcher chairing the committee.
Miss Phylliss Troisi and Ernest Russo wed at St Bridgets Church in Maynard in a ceremony attended by family and friends from Boston, New York, Concord and surrounding towns. The couple, both from local families, will reside on 43 Waltham Street after a wedding journey to New York Philadelphia Washington and Virginia.
Armistice Day was observed at Memorial Park Monday morning with an impressive ceremony led by Frank J. DeMars Post A L and Auxiliary. Members and veterans assembled for the event.
The diphtheria clinic for school and pre school children was held at Roosevelt school on Tuesday morning. The Board of Health arranged a clinic next Monday morning from 9 to 11 a. m., with another early in December to care for this group. Officials urge parents to use this opportunity to protect children against the disease. They note most diphtheria cases occur in children six months to three years and stress the seriousness to parents.
A miscel laneous shower entertained over fifty guests from Maynard Hudson Leominster Worcester and Boston with a mock marriage dancing and games plus refresh ments. The bride to be received many beautiful and useful gifts.
Miss Doris Graham daughter of Mr and Mrs E J Graham of Concord wed Mr Hancock of Waltham at Trinitarian Church with Miss Graham as bridesmaid and Thom Ross best man. The couple will reside at 97 Overland Road Waltham after a wedding trip to Vermont.
The Acton Agricultural Association held its annual turkey supper and business meeting at the town house on Thursday November 7 with about 80 present. President Major Coulter chaired. reports were read, and a net balance of 133 dollars was noted after expenses. Election of officers was deferred to December 8 and bylaw changes were proposed to improve assignment distribution.
Mrs ay Butler Campbell announces the engagement of her daughter Frances Campbell. Mr and Mrs Morse will spend the season in Washington D C and will be at home after December 2 at Overhills Sudbury for friends.
A union service of Protestant churches in Maynard was held at Union Congregational Church. Rev Mathew A Vance and Norman and Jean Davis presented a pageant titled KH Shall Not Happen Again as part of the evening. Members of the Congregational church are voting on the matter.
In St Bridget’s Church a large gathering witnessed Miss Doris Arlene Perry daughter of Mr and Mrs Arthur Perry of 12 Forest Street wed Anthony Andrew Krauchune Jr son of Mr and Mrs Anthony Krauchune of 111 Broad Street Hudson The ceremony was at one o’clock Sunday afternoon Rev James McCarthy officiated The bride wore a white satin gown with train a Lily collar and white roses Her veil had a high crown of Spanish lace She carried a shower bouquet of white roses and lilies of the valley Miss Florence DeGrappo was maid of honor and Joseph Connery was best man A reception followed in Grange Halls with guests from Waltham Springfield Somerville New York Connecticut New Jersey and Maine.
G A Pierce 57 a well known West Acton expressman died at Emerson Hospital last Friday November 8 after a long illness He was born in Rochester NY and moved to West Acton ten years ago with his family His wife Mrs Sarah A Pierce and three step sons James E Durkin William J Durkin and Robert E Durkin survive He served as a father to his step children and funeral services were held Monday at two o clock at the family home officiated by Rev W Ashley Hawley rector Ascension Episcopal Church East Cambridge
West Acton host Henry Hopkinson again heads the annual Red Cross drive with two Acton High School groups assisting. Recruits Lucille Hayward Rita Dunivan Elizabeth Reed from South Acton and Ruth Noll Barbara Jenks Alice Leveroni Jeanette Rifford Helen Creeley Mary Whitcomb from West Acton are expected to match last year’s enthusiasm and support.
The social under the young men of the parish begins at 8 o'clock with free admission and prizes. Last Friday a social drew more than 100 enthusiastic guests.
Reports from Maynard indicate a thriving local industry with the Assabet mill operating at capacity and employing about 2000 workers. Unlike previous years, Christmas business looks solid as payrolls rise and more orders come in, encouraging merchants to urge shoppers to buy locally and shop early.
James Grimes a longtime West Acton resident and carpenter died at his home on Willow Street. Born 1861 in Burlington Nova Scotia he was active in town affairs and the Republican town committee. Survived by daughter Ella Harvey PawtucketRI son Albert Grimes and three brothers I B Grimes Leominster E B Grimes Malden and John.
Miss Stowell died Tuesday at her home after a life in town. She served as assistant to late postmaster Walter B Currier for years and was active in the Congregational church. Her only near relative is Mrs Ella Hudson of St Leprend Perry Flint, Clintence Her bert Young and Hosmer. Burial will be Hope cemetery.
About 80 to 90 attend President's Day event at West Concord Woman's Club Friday afternoon November let. Mrs. Walter Stanton, Eleventh District Director and guest of honor, outlines her plan of work for the coming year. Presidents of nearby clubs and guests share corsages and bouquets. The Elloma Trio from Clinton with accompanist present a program of songs.
Garrity of Lowell presided as 4 state ident of the Auxiliary with Mrs. Eva By ers as president and Mrs. Eleanor Sheridan reappointed secretary for her 14th term. Arley Lawrence served as adjutant, with Rev. James P. Cherry and Michael Rynkiewicz among officers. Bessie Hallowell led the committee as a past jewel was awarded to Lawrence, the retiring commander of the Legion.
Mr and Mrs Ottorok and son of Belmont were guests of Bert W Martin and Mrs Her for a visit reported in the local note.
