Concord Lions Club kicks off the annual Massachusetts Lions eye research campaign with 10 teams selling light bulbs door to door. November designated Light Bulb Month, bulbs include four 40 watt four 60 watt one 100 watt and two 15 amp fuses. The effort supports national and local medical grants totaling 87 991 33 across clinics physicians and research.
A weeks long dispute between Concord board of selectmen and Andrew H. Hepburn ends in compromise. Hepburn resigns as chairman of the board of appeals. Walker E. Dow Jr. elected chairman. charges withdrawn and both boards praise amicable settlement for the town.
The Concord group requests a public hearing at the Town House on Jacqueline Dow’s petition regarding a portion of Op Street for shop and sale. Grenier asks removal from her premises on Harrington Avenue. the case concerns neighbor impact and potential rulings.

West Concord resident George C. DePratere aged 68 died suddenly at home Tuesday morning. A WWI veteran born in Coutie Belgium he lived here 41 years and worked in Maynard and Watham before retiring. Survived by wife Gabrielle two daughters four grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Funeral from Dee Funeral Home followed by a requiem high mass at Our Lady Help of Christians Church burial in St Bernard Cemetery town flag at half staff.
The First Parish Unitarian Church in Concord outlines a busy schedule. The Women's Parish Association hosts a supper and auction at 6 30 p.m. tomorrow, junior young people meet at 6 30 p.m. Sunday, teachers meet at 8 p.m. Sunday, a potluck luncheon at 1 p.m. Monday features guest speaker George Selleck speaking on Quakerism. A bloodmobile visits the parish hall on Thursday November 21 from 1 30 to 7 p.m.
A first anniversary mass was sung at St Bernard's Church Concord for the late Mrs Teresa Venti a resident of Elsinore street. Dr Francis X Guindon Western estant director of division of state teachers colleges spoke at Hotel Touraine Boston during an American Education Week Kiwanis Club program.
Concord will host a public hearing Monday evening at 8 in the Town House court room on the Concord Carlisle Regional School District budget for 1958. Concord’s share is 90.34 percent of 8400, with Carlisle at 9.66 percent. Dr. Robert Ireland and district officials will answer questions.
Concord School Committee voted to close elementary schools Wednesday afternoons this winter. From Nov 20 to March 26 parent conferences and staff curriculum studies will use released time. Tuition for non residents is 344.23 for elementary, 456.19 for high school, and 437.77 for trainable classes. The panel meets with Lexington and Newton committees and Harvard education faculty on Nov 26 at the Harvard Club to discuss Ford Foundation funded program.
Carlisle A junior and intermediate Endeavor rally held at Carlisle National Church. Barbara Wilkie won the Bible drill for the intermediates. Ellen Bearce was first and Wanda Harrison second in the juniors.
Concord faces a legal dispute over whether the board of selectmen had the authority to grant a license for a building that does not yet exist. Chester Smethurst seeks to erect 16 alleys on 31 Sudbury road, with neighbors objecting and seeking an injunction. The matter has been referred to legal counsel and Concord has had no alleys since 1941.
Concord selectmen promote Patrolman James Hanley of Belknap Street to sergeant effective immediately to fill the vacancy from Sgt Finan retirement. Hanley, an eight year Concord veteran and three year safety officer, is a World War II veteran with 35 months overseas. He is married to Anne Craig with two children James and Ellen. Firefighters battled an early evening fire at the McPhillips cottage on Lexington Road, confined to one room.

Miss Mary Coughlin, postmaster at West Concord, returned home last week after attending the postmasters convention in Los Angeles, California.
A near capacity Concord A crowd heard Roland Greeley outline town planning stages at Alcott School. He said planners propose options and analyses while the town makes decisions in warrants and policy. Discussion focused on open land preservation, zoning limits, and growth impacts in nearby towns.
Concord women of Trinity Church invite attendance at a meeting on November 18 at 745 p m to hear Rev Dr John E Wallace lecture on Stained Glass He is a former minister of Trinitarian Congregational Church and has lectured at schools colleges art clubs and institutions including the Boston Museum of Fine Arts Newport Art Association and the John Herron Art Institute He uses colored slides and the event is described as a must attend for the women of Trinity.
Diesel fuel sales totaled more than 174 million barrels for 1955 with railroads purchasing 46 percent of the supply.
Concord officials state Fire Chief Henry Patterson remains acting building inspector while Town Engineer Anthony Canon’s consolidation is not yet done. The post has been vacant since John Nichols was fired October 1. Deputy inspector Waldo and inspector MacWilliams, plus planning board chair Edward True as consultant, draw salaries totaling $3,000.
Massachusetts Department of Mental Health launches a statewide program for children ages three to seven. The plan centers on pre school nursery centers offering diagnostic services and parent counseling, linked to regional mental health centers. Dr Arthur Bindman and Mrs Helen Bacon head the effort in cooperation with local groups and United Cerebral Palsy affiliates. Locally, classes meet Tue Thu 9 am to 12 pm and Wed 1 pm to 3 pm at the Trinitarian Congregational Church nursery room, taught by Miss Elizabeth Perkins of Wellesley. Lawton will speak Monday November 18 at 8 p.m. at Thoreau School to discuss residential and commercial zoning ideas from his group. The presentation extends the October 21 citizen’s council talk and covers possible policies for the West Concorde commercial area.
