A 1953 Sunday league event, Tag Day, was held to raise funds with volunteers from Concord Little League and the Dodgers of Red Sox and other groups calling on citizens to attend weather permitting. The effort supported center field activities and weekly game play.
The text describes an election on the 6th and a remem vote with a fine show. It notes air raid drills and a schedule change. The program opens Monday with a Tuesday continuation of the show at 8 15.
Concord region four civil defense announces a Tuesday May 26 practice alert at 11 o clock. The red alert will use three minutes of fire whistle blasts signaling potential attack and the all clear follows at 11 08 a m with four box 55 whistle blasts indicating danger over.
Concord confronts the blue laws issue as Attorney General George Fingold seeks Sunday enforcement. Police Chief William G. Ryan reported open businesses, and the board of selectmen planned action after a Monday night meeting.
Concord resident Robert J. OGrady, 21, son of Mr and Mrs John J OGrady, completed the pre flight phase of pilot training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio Texas. A former high school track athlete and skidder, OGrady served three years in the Air Force before starting aviator training. He recently returned home on furlough.
Concord reports a surge in special teachers employed by the school department. These specialists work beyond the high school, serving the entire system and covering subjects beyond the three R's to foster well rounded individuals.
Local interest grows for the May 26 special election to fill the 13th Middlesex District seat formerly held by Governor's Councillor David B Williams. Candidates are ex Rep Harold Tompkins of Lowell and Selectman Emile A Dumas of Maynard, the Republican and Democratic nominees respectively. Tompkins, a former eight year state representative, long serving Concord school committee chair, and noted Rhode Island Red breeder, is married with five children.
One woman was injured in a two car crash at the junction of Route 62 and Route 2 Concord turnpike Sunday night during rain. Salvatore Momtuori, 61, of 52 Litchfield Street Brighton told police Richard J Roche, 28, of Waltham made a sudden stop and Roche said he was stopped at the light when struck.
A joint Concord School Committee and Citizens' Council meeting is set for Thursday evening May 21. They will hear progress reports from several sub committees on the need for more space in public schools.
Registration and examination of pre school children scheduled for June 2 at Thoreau School West Concord from 10:00 to 11:30 in attendance Dr. Howard E Robinson. June 3 at Alcott School Concord from 10:00 to 11:30 with Dr. Randolph Piper in attendance.
West Concord PTA at its May 14 meeting elected officers for the coming year: President Nicholas Delaney, Vice President Mrs John Alden, Secretary Mrs William Lawrence, Treasurer Edward DItalia. Miss Hutchison's room won the attendance prize. Prof Leo Martins talk on Radio TV and Your Child drew strong interest and offered practical help to many parents.
Donald B. Hyde, a nationally known bird authority, will be the keynote speaker for the Young Women's Guild at West Concord Union Church Monday at 8 p.m. He will illustrate his talk titled A Birds Fre View of the Birds and You. This is the last meeting of the year and all adult church members are invited.
Sudbury dog school announces classes forming across Beginners Advanced and Junior Groups. For information contact Sudbury 127-5. Wm. Bill Dooley is the trainer and an A K C licensed handler.
The scholarship committee awards up to 400 for the year starting next September to Lincoln residents who graduated high school within the last three years. Many Lincoln students may be eligible for this generous scholarship.
West Concord plans a 9:45 a.m. May 24 gathering at the West Concord Railroad Station and procession to Kenneth Dunn Square with hymn, marker decoration, taps and echo, and a firing squad volley. Our Lady Help of Christians church will hold Sunday services at 10:30 a.m. on Church Street.
Volunteers in Concord have raised 101 percent of the 1958 cancer crusade goal, announced from the American Cancer Society Massachusetts Division headquarters in Boston. The statewide drive seeks 661,980 and stands at 605,000 with continued efforts expected to push past the target. State campaign chairman Frederic C. Dumaine Jr. praised workers and urged ongoing efforts to reach completion.
A near capacity crowd at Concords joint Planning Board and Finance Committee hearing signals a likely large town meeting next Monday at the Veterans Building to act on 17 warrant articles. Debate centers on zoning and a proposed high pressure pumping station on Fairhaven hill with land acquisition and costs discussed.
The American Unitarian Association holds its annual wave lecture at the meeting house on Monday May 25 at 4 p.m. Clergy, invited guests and delegates will attend. The lecturer is Howard Mumford Jones Litt D LHD Professor of English at Harvard University.
