Maynard residents host and visit amid wartime service with many letters of support. Local names include Miss Ethel Panton, Miss Harriet Garret, and Mrs. Alice Panton visiting relatives in Providence and Linden streets. Several men serve or are stationed nearby with family visits and weekend guests noted.
Roger Allen visited Concord while David Towler returned to town. Families and guests visited Belchertown Allentown Cambridge and Everett. Local hires and moves include Frank Harris William Chisholm joining the fire department and Arthur Loftus leaving Snow’s for Con cord J unction Worsted mills. The Middlesex school nine beat Milton Academy 9 to 6 and an upcoming crew race is scheduled on Batesman pond. A memorial service for Corp. John F. Giles in Lincoln was held at St Anne’s church.
Local notices list residents changing employment at Adams and Bridges and Strathmore Woolen mill. Boston guest Melvin Mackay visits the McCabe family in Concord. Birth announced for Ruth Allen Pratt at Deaconess hospital. Moves, visits, and hospital stays across Concord, Allston, Newtonville, Marlboro, and Norwell. May activities include church Sodality gathering and a benefit theatre performance for Camp Devens.
Dr Immanuel Pfeiffer a retired physician who practiced in Boston and New Bedford died at his Brookshield home after two paralytic strokes He was born in Denmark March 29 1841 came to the United States 50 years ago practiced in New Bedford and Boston and had lived in Bedford about 26 years He leaves a wife four sons William Pfeiffer Immanuel Pfeiffer Jr Louie I Pfeiffer and Albert Pfeiffer a major in the Medical Reserve Corps at Camp Logan Texas and three daughters Mrs Ojiie Blaaberg of London Miss Hannah E B and Miss Alice L Pfeiffer all of Bedford
The Trinity church men's club met in the vestry on Wednesday evening with Wilfred Wheeler as speaker addressing the gathering. Afterward, refreshments were served by the church ladies.
The Concord fire department held a Saturday night banquet at Tuttle's stable with a full supper and entertainment. Participants included Richard Hartnett James O Leary and Frank Macdonald. Engine 1 officers elected were John Manning captain William Brennan Keut and M J Finigan clerk.
The death of Abram Hoffecker occurred Sunday May 28 and shocked the town. Funeral services were held from his late home Tuesday afternoon with Rev. Loren B. Macdonald officiating. Bearers included General Charles K. Darling H F Smith Jr Walter Howe G Hollis Blake Frederick G Shull and W H Paine of Boston. Hoffecker was born in Chestertown Maryland in 1855 and moved to Concord five years ago where he made many friends. He is survived by a wife a niece and several brothers. The community extends sympathy to them.
Scouts Barker Chamberlain Lovell Leith Tolman Wood Russell Smith of Troop 1 journeyed up the river by canoe Sunday and returned with improvised sails after lunch at camp. They say they had a very good time. The town flag nightly since sunset will be lowered at 6 o clock to avoid study interference.
The W C T U met at Mrs. Stow's home Tuesday afternoon for a pleasant session. Mrs. Stow is superintendent of Flower missions. Middlesex county mid year meeting will be at the White Ribbon home in Ayer Mass on May 22. The Middlesex drive raised about $10 000 for the White Ribbon home.
The local Boy Scouts led by Charles Beck raised 4500 for the third Liberty loan in a week long drive. On Saturday alone 3200 was collected. Medal winners for most subscribers were Allan Stevenson George Zeigler Francis Wetherbee Harry Pratley John Loring and Lloyd Hoagland.
Daniel Edward Haynes longtime railroad station agent of this town died at his Hartford street home after a short illness on Thursday. Born in Concord May 18, 1848 he came to town 48 years ago with his wife and served as station agent. He belonged to the Thomas Talbot Lodge of Masons and is survived by his wife and two grandchildren Mrs A C Plastridge and Basil E Fletcher. Masonic funeral services were held at his residence Sunday at 2 30 p m with Mrs James Chase singing. Interment was in Shawsheen cemetery.
Announcement notes the marriage of Miss Ethel Peterson of Carlisle Road to Harold E. Thresher of Dorchester. A special five day law waiver was issued by Judge Parmenter. The ceremony occurred at the bridegroom’s home performed by Rev. Alfred A. Ibert. Thresher is a seaman on the U S S Charleston. Albert Er or Camp Devens served as best man with May Tutt as maid of honor. The couple will reside with the Petersons for now.
The local food administrator issued a notice requiring all households owning 80 pounds or more of flour including graham and whole wheat to complete and mail the flour card by May 4. Edward Walsh visited from Camp Devens recently. Oblate Fathers of Lowell plan a mission at St Michael's Church next Sunday. Mr and Mrs William Fitzgerald of Concord Junction were guests in Bedford. Jesse H Philbin received a Medal of Honor from the War Department. he was a Yale athlete and well liked by classmates.
During the week ending May, West Acton Red Cross completed items including sweaters for Miss Maud Priest and Eleanor Hall, multiple pairs of socks and wristers for several members, bandages, comfort pillows, eye dressings, fomentations, and Junior Red Cross contributions. Local names listed include Mrs. Moses Thompson, Mrs. B C Steele, Mrs. W B Holt, Mrs. H Mead, Mrs. Wood, Mrs. Hobart Mead, Miss Dorothy Mead, Miss Marila Willis, Mrs. Olive Poland, Maria E. Steele.
A Saturday exhibition features a Mass Reformatory officer team led by Oscar Wood versus a veteran lineup captained by Sergt EB Lyons with stars like Walter Akers Benj Derby and M J Hayes. Proceeds go to the Red Cross and a large crowd could spark a summer series.
Miss Grace Jones departed Thursday April 25 to Lakewood New Jersey to await orders for duties in the Red Cross surgical department she has joined. She has many friends in town who extend best wishes for her work wherever she is sent.
Tony Perry joined George Meade’s team. Miss Dennison of Maine works at Mrs. L. M. Mead’s home. The W C T U met at Mrs. M. S. Harriman’s home on Tuesday. Mr and Mrs Warren Hayward moved into their renovated house Saturday. Funeral attendees from the village gathered for Rev John A. Crowe’s service in Cambridge on April 30. John Hopps and family moved to Groveton New Hampshire this week after selling land to Ernest Morse. The fire department fought a large brush fire at North Acton Thursday afternoon and evening. Chas Whitcomb walks with a cane after weeks at home due to a foot and leg injury. The Baptist Sunday school will hold its annual session Sunday with class reports and officer elections.
Concord Grange held a Bird Night meeting in which Mrs F B Goode of Sharon spoke on birds aided by Au dubon society. A May 15 patriotic night invites G A R and Spanish War veterans. Carlisle minstrel show raised 25 for the Red Cross.
Edith Jones of Concord and Paul Petersen joined in marriage last week in a private ceremony at Concord Junction. A reception followed at the groom’s home with relatives and friends in attendance. Best wishes surround the couple.
A Friday night dance in Unionhall Carlisle drew many locals. Carlisle firemen organized the event and the Colonial orchestra of Maynard furnished music. Church ladies provided refreshments at intermission.
Saturday afternoon at the Concord Country Club George N White led with a strong score. George Keyes, Bowers, Ballou and Howard posted results in a tight field.
Concord High won its eighth straight by beating the alumni nine 16 to 13 on Saturday. Old players returned for the alumni, including Shepherd and the Bulger brothers, Mulcahey, Fallon, Loftus, and Hayes, drawing much interest.

The regular meeting featured a cornet solo by Leslie Burr and a home scene The Busy Body. Mrs Whitney sang Keep the Home Fires Burning while Rev Thomas Street now in France was read from. Stanley Blackmer presented a short minstrel show with Innocence by Mabel Libbey and humorous selections by Miss Emerson. A seated courting scene The Hint starred Mr Cutter and Marie Nelson. A five-person party visited friends in Ayer Sunday.
The illustrated talk “My Experience Among the Fighters” drew about 145 listeners. La Barronne, who lived in France before WWI, described the war with realism and showed how she organized a hospital in a burned chateau that German forces seized in 1914. Funds from the event exceed $100 for the local Red Cross.
South South Frank Davis has moved to this town and now resides in the house formerly occupied by Mr. Gay.
Merton Leighton departed Middlesex Insurance Co in Concord to begin a two month training course at Wentworth Institute Boston. Colleagues presented him a shaving set as a token of friendship before his departure. Mrs Joseph Alexander travels to Norfolk Downs to join her husband and establish their new home after staying with her parents.
