Irish Home Rule Bill Moves Ahead But Falls Short
London May 8. The government presents a long delayed Irish bill to the Commons. It gives Ireland a council with eight department control while crown retains key powers including the constabulary. Eight departments are listed with the imperial authorities retaining the supreme court and police. The measure aims at local self government but draws sharp criticism from Unionists and Radicals alike. The council would have 82 elected and 24 nominated members with a new Irish fund of about 20 million dollars annually. The bill passed its first reading after a heated debate and closure by 417 to 121.
