Maynard residents allege a spate of missing cats aged up to ten years, many housed near Paper Mill area, with owners seeking the culprit. Health officials deny ties to recent cat disappearances, while angry women suspect a cat stealing racket and vow action if caught.
Maynard Chamber of Commerce tabled yearly dues from 3 to 1 and voted a 25 dollar gift to Emerson Hospital. A three member committee including Priest, Dineen, and Vance was named to solicit contributions from local organizations. A plan to form a nine member advisory group on welfare and town planning was proposed. Other actions included forming a three member committee to explore gas, electricity, and phone routes for Maynard residents and considering fence replacement along the canal.
John M Bellows Jr a University of Vermont freshman was formally initiated into Wig and Kin men’s honorary dramatic society. He previously graduated from North High in 1930.
Nearly 300 people attended the Woman's Union Men’s Night at the Trinitarian Congregational Church in Concord. A chicken pie supper was served by Mrs Herbert H. Cook, with Mrs Earle H. Parks at the piano. President Mrs Laura D Wilder welcomed the gathering before Dr. Brewer Eddy spoke on missionary work, followed by social interludes as attendees lingered for conversation before leaving.
Rev John Rex Shepler spoke on The Kentucky Mountains at the Methodist church Sunday night. Epworth League delegates led by Howard Whitney attended the Hudson Circuit meeting in Clinton Monday. Ladies Aid met at Mrs Isaac Binks home. Adelphi class to meet at Mrs Rachel Barlow’s Friday. Maynard Assembly Rainbow for Girls to attend service next Sunday. Finnish Lutheran choir of thirty voices led by Ilmar Twikke to perform. Annual Methodist conference set for Winthrop April 6 to 10 with Emmanuel Taylor and William Naylor as delegates. Official church board to meet Monday April 3.
South Sudbury Memorial Church staged a bridal pageant Friday night, featuring gowns from 1852 to 1932. Mrs Bessie Maynard and Mrs Lawrence Winship opened with music while Mrs Carlton Elms announced each gown. Rev. Albert B. Raynolds led a marriage service as brides moved to Lohengrin’s Wedding March. Afterward, a vestry reception offered wedding cake, sandwiches, and beverages.
Maynard Council Knights of Columbus outlines a bigger sports night with boxing exhibitions wrestling bouts and headline speakers. The event, under Grand Knight James B Farrell, may move to Colonial Hall to meet high ticket demand. An April 11 meeting will feature a concert by Framingham Council members.
A pageant drama by Rev Mathew A Vance of Union Congregational church was staged by a Maynard cast in Stoneham last Sunday evening. The program features Rev and Mrs M A Vance and many named actors with a quartet providing accompaniment. The drama will tour West Acton, Maynard, and South Acton on successive Sundays and Mondays in early April, with a parish supper planned for April 7 at the Union Congregational church.
Concord Grange No.150 held Home Economics Night at Ellis hall last week. Miss Nettie A Wells presided and a public program featured moving pictures on chicken raising sponsored by Burleigh L Pratt. Refreshments followed during a cordial social hour. Concord Grange accepted an invitation to visit Acton Grange.
Washington reports the reforestation bill, providing President Roosevelt powers to employ housing and feed 250000 unemployed men, is expected to become law within 24 hours as the House planned swift passage despite protests against the aid method. Reginald W. Bird of Boston, a dairy businessman, considers becoming New England milk administrator upon Dr. Arthur Gilbert's recommendation to implement an orderly marketing system to save the industry.
June Bolduc and Helen Lindenmann both 9 and 8, who had played and studied together, drowned in the Muddy River. They were given separate funeral services and buried in different cemeteries, but their coffins passed together in two white hearses during the final journey through Roxbury.
In Manchester on March 29 Wilfred Lachance, 32, unemployed, used gas to kill himself and his 7 year old son Roger in a crude bier of boxes and mattresses. The bodies were found when Lachance’s partner returned from work at a mill.
In Lima on March 29 reports say a massive landslide triggered by heavy rains destroyed Tentaday village, wiping out its population of about 1000. Earlier counts had 76 bodies recovered and 120 feared dead, underscoring the disaster’s severity.

Maynard Town veteran Maynard-Dick Loftus, a former National League player, will manage Arlington semipro baseball this season. Loftus promises a fast outfit with local talent and has Redding, Clancy, and Walsh among potential fits. A catcher and an outfielder are among the positions being considered.
Fourteen candidates were initiated at a special meeting of Our Lady Help of Christians Court, Co D of A, at Odd Fellows Hall in West Concord Monday evening. Miss Agnes Collins presided, with Irene Hockwell in charge of degree work, assisted by Lillian Clark Anne Ballard Lillian Murray Catherine Madden and Catherine Ryan. A 14 voice choir from Catholic Daughters in Greater Boston, led by Lillian Kivian Shaver, sang. Mrs John P Hennessey aided in degree work. Margaret Hearn sang with Jul a Dee pianist. Supper was served by Cornelia Bedford.
Maynard Joe Kugima and Fardy of Acton staged 18 minute bout with Fardy winning by double arm lock and scissors. A P wrestlers Mountain Dean, Joe Lubin, George Gutteridge, Hymie the Hermit and others posted draws or wins amid a crowded barn.
Tea room owners and prospective operators are invited to a management meeting at the Middlesex Everett street office in Concord Massachusetts. The April 7 session runs 10 30 am to 3 30 pm and will be led by Mrs H J Haynes Massachusetts State College home management specialist. Topics include public food preferences hiring helpers menu planning and fair pricing. Special problems in the work will be considered.
The Young Cooperation Club weekly whist party was held Monday night at United Cooperative building and drew a large crowd. Elmer Peterson won a $5 merchandise prize with many others receiving awards. A further party is planned for next Monday and a special whist event on April 17.
Annursnac Grange met last Monday in Warner Hall West Concord for a curtailed program, holding only a social gathering. Mrs Clara Sweet presided.
Kazimierz Kurosky alias Kurowsky 19 Roosevelt Street Maynard was charged with bigamy in Concord district court. Police say he married Sophie Jurgo in Maynard on July 26 1924 and deserted six weeks later taking $300. He allegedly married Maryanne Pizouar in Worcester on October 31 1931. The first wife from Shirley cooperates. case continued until next Monday.
The Anchor and Ark Glee Club of Maynard led by Gavin Taylor will join the New England Federation of Men's Glee Clubs in an April 8 contest and concert at Symphony. About 1,000 men from 23 clubs will perform. soprano Sestrude Ehrhart appears as guest artist. Federation officers include Herbert Gurney Wolaston president and John Crowley Beverly vice president.
Mary Boyce of Lincoln was high scorer and first prize winner at the Elk’s Whist Party in Concord Lodge Elks Hall under Lovell P. George. John Bartolomeo Jr and Manley Boyce took second and third prizes. many others won prizes and a second event is planned for Ellis Hall tomorrow with more prizes.
Sudbury senior Carolyn Guptill daughter of Mr and Mrs Melvin B Guptill played the title role in The Piper by Josephine Prescott Peabody at Abbott Academy. Her handling of the difficult role was intelligent and sensitive.
Bedford March 27 seven boys rode a detached trailer on Great Road near Bedford Centre. The tow shaft failed and the trailer swung into a car driven by Katherine Archibald of Lexington, killing Russell Smith 11 and Herford Cormier 13. Four others were injured, including Archie Smith 14 and Arthur Davis 14, all treated at Symmes Arlington Hospital. John Smith escaped injury.
Concord Woman's Club held a Presidents Day gathering at the Girl Scout Community House with 37 district clubs represented. District director Mrs George Benson and former director Mrs George Sawyer spoke while Dr Miriam Skirball discussed American drama. flowers and tea followed the program.
Last Friday evening Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Perkins of Hartford Street celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary with friends and relatives. A fernery was given, verses were shared, and gifts were found inside a cake amid laughter. Attendees included Ethan Davison and family of Sudbury and Belmont guests Thomas McSoley and Frank McMahon, among others.
The Sudbury station of the NY N H and H railroad has been closed for years with dim hopes of reopening. Citizens suggest the company might donate the building for town use if appealed to properly. Some propose moving it to the Community playground to serve as a locker building.
Mrs Wilbur Wells of Concord Road hosted a bridge and whist gathering Wednesday evening for the Bedford PTA Ways and Means committee. Winners included Mrs Polio in whist and Roland Wells in bridge, with several guests earning consolation prizes. Refreshments were served as the event concluded late.
More than 7000 residents from nearby towns registered at the Cooper Radio Electric Company store opening on Nason Street Saturday. Several General Electric appliances were awarded to registrants, including a Hot Point Featherweight iron to Fred Marrino, a G. E. clock to Emily Mank, a G. E. Toaster to A. Bader, and a G. E. Hot Point iron to W. H. Mann.
A young boy, son of Mr and Mrs Dan Hayes of West Concord, was struck by a car while crossing a street near a bus stop. He suffered facial and body abrasions and contusions but is reported to be recovering at Emerson Hospital in Concord. The incident occurred Saturday afternoon as he ran behind a vehicle, a distance of about 50 feet, before being aided by Clarence R Howard of South Acton.
Maynard officials report several applications for beer licenses filed with the selectmen. Frank S. Binks notes state policy will be set by the Legislature, then towns decide actions. Maynard had four retail and two wholesale licenses before Prohibition in 1918, with $1000 per license paid to town treasury. Officials await further developments before acting on current applications.
Albert Knoll, a former Concord resident with 25 years in the drug business, opens a new drug store in Acton at the former Cooper store location. He previously owned a Cambridge drug shop for 17 years and recently operated in Malden. A special sale runs through April 1 to mark the opening.
