What the letter carriers do for Local Postoffice patrons
Postmaster F A Tower reports a weekly study of carrier work. Average daily mail per carrier runs about 69 pounds chiefly in the morning, with each carrier traveling about 19 miles daily. Some mail is delivered by bicycle, shortening delivery time to about one third. Winter conditions may slow walking routes but the service remains essential. The study notes increased government service and better pay for clerks and carriers, with top priority on improving service as receipts permit.
