Acton town approves a total annual grant of 119108.46 covering roads, snow removal, public welfare, veterans relief, fire and police services, libraries, cemeteries, and town administration. Additional allocations include 850 feet of road work on Kinsey Road West Acton and construction of a town hall vault for public records.
Fred Kelley 67 of Maynard died Monday at a Pondville hospital after a recent operation. He lived in Maynard 35 years and was a carpenter. Survived by wife five sons Walter Edward Raymond of Maynard Frank of Fairfield Connecticut Louis of Dallas Texas and daughter Cora May. Funeral Thursday at St Bridget's church with a requiem mass at 9 and burial in the parish cemetery.
Old Man Winter seems to have left for the year and will return next December. Most welcome is the thaw as people shed heavy coats and enjoy warmer days. Golf clubs are being dusted off for a long season ahead.
More than 600 people attended the Sudbury Grange 50th anniversary at the Town hall. A banquet for about 260 guests preceded a birthday cake with 40 candles cut by Merton L. Haskell. Gold sheaf presented to Mrs Josephine White. 26 year silver certificates awarded to ten members.
Mrs. Edward B. Caiger chaired the Drama Committee of the Concord Women's club entertaining her committee the cast and assistants of the Woman's club during a social gathering at the clubhouse.
Lin denstreet, a World War I veteran and former commander of Frank J DeMars Post, AL, died Sunday night at Naval hospital of pneumonia. He was 46, born in Clinton, longtime Maynard resident, served in France with the 2nd division. Survived by three brothers and two sisters. Funeral held at home with a requiem mass at St. Bridget’s church and military honors at St. Bridget’s cemetery. Downey was a charter member of the Frank J DeMars Post, member of Maynard Post VFW and Maynard lodge BP OE, and served in the local police department.
The regular meeting at the firehouse drew twenty members with President Henry Tolman presiding. Plans for Jones Community Field development included purchases for mowing equipment and a committee to discuss a regional baseball league with Stow. Ten members formed a committee to plan the baseball season while standing committees were named for field, membership, finance, purchasing, entertainment, and publicity.
The Maynard Acton and Stow Milk Dealers Association met at United Cooperative to petition the State Milk Control Board to permit selling milk at 12 cents per quart. With Milk Control setting 13 cents for the area and farmers having a recent one cent gain, dealers will persist with 12 cents until the board acts.
In Sudbury a contested ballot may force a special election for selectman after recounts showed Hall 247 to Goodnow 246 with one disputed ballot. If the ballot is discarded the race becomes a tie and a new election is ordered. Also noted is the sudden death of Robert William Carter, Concord musician and business figure. He died in West Concord from acute indigestion and heart failure. He was born in England, 1871, studied at the New England Conservatory, and served as organist for the Massachusetts Reformatory. He was active in local commerce and fraternal groups and survived by his wife. The funeral is set for West Concord Union Church.
The Concord Woman's Club staged three varied plays Monday in Veterans Building directed by Mrs. Edward B Caiger. Casts included Mrs Oblein Mrs Helene Daniels and Miss Nancy Carkin with supporting players. A fine musical interlude featured Peter Walters Harry Van Horn and Leigh Bilder from the Newngland Conservatory of Music.
The Sudbury selectmen will study the annual town election resolution and act on warrant articles on separate dates. The recent report on appropriations omits several items including interest 3146 salaries 2110 street lights 4200 road maintenance 2000 4800 and road construction 1000. The town voted against sports on the Lord's Day 130 to 0.
The First Parish in Concord led by Rev Edward P Daniels holds a morning service at 11 with a 9 45 a m church school and a sermon titled Which Turn. The Emerson Society meets at 5 30 in the vestry, and Rev Arthur K E Beckett of Acton will speak at 8 on The Southern Views the Negro. Monday at 3 0 o'clock Rev Bradford Gale of Lincoln will speak on The Needs and Hazards of Youth Today.
On a submerged ice cake the three Patrolmen Thomas Finan James Finan and Edward Lawton tied by a clothes line towed to shore four Concord youths Bixby Hill 13 George Hill 15 Robert Freeman 14 and Weston Meigs 18 after braving two feet of water and shifting current spectators on Elm Street bridge watched as the rescues succeeded.
Maynard events include Rev and Mrs Thomas Bowmar speaking on the Maylay Straits at morning and afternoon services, Epworth League program, Philathea Class gathering, a World Fellowship Night, and a church food sale at Maynard Grill. Next Sunday Rev Webster H Powell will preach and a four reel motion picture Padre Sahib will be shown.
Maynard leads BRA approval of projects including apple pest control equipment wood sawing and continuum related items. The package outlines funding and timelines for community improvements.
Mrs Ning Cross Maynard, a respected resident for 20 years in the town, died Saturday morning at age years. The Rev A Vance, pastor of the Union Congregational, conducted rites in Salem, New Hampshire, for burial. Friends, neighbors, and relatives sent abundant flowers expressing affection.
