Mrs Ida Christie 80 widow of Dr Samuel Christie longtime local physician died at home after six years illness. Native of New Hampshire she lived in South Acton many years and belonged to Congregational Church. Survived by sons Dr James D Christie of Litton and Robert S Christie of Flushing and two grandchildren. Funeral Friday at 2 pm at the Church with Rev A W Whitner officiating.
Maynard Lenten Mission runs nightly all week at the Congregational church with Rev John Moore McGann honorary dean of Christ Church Cathedral Springfield leading preaching and teaching for eight days. He is aided by Rev Burdette Lansdowne rector of St Episcopal church. McGann will address men and a luncheon is open to all. The mission ends with a Sunday service.
The toadstone ring of the Middle Ages was believed to ward off disease and witchcraft. England’s royalty reportedly trusted the ring as a cure for cramps and sickness, with eight rings blessed on Good Friday according to legend.
John Bradley of Marlboro aided by drivers and locals prevented a Benzel fuel truck from exploding amid a blaze at the Davis Turkey Farm Inn in Sudbury. The fire damaged the tap room and turkey pens, with about 100 birds burned. Firefighters struggled to fight flames due to limited water supply while a garage attached to the inn was spared.
A Thursday Elks smoker at Elks Hall drew about a hundred attendees. Entertainment featured Edward Donahue and John Ball with vocal solos by William Priest Charles Visocchi John S Louis Michaela Joseph Schnab Jr Frank Parks William Scully Jene F Rainville and a special award to Leslie W Sims. The annual Bedford town election in the town hall re-elected caucus nominees for selectman road commissioner board of health free warden and others. Daniel B Perkins defeated Lonie B Pfeiffer by 17 votes with 675? votes cast. The next town meeting is set for next Monday evening in the school auditorium.
Charles H. Beck, principal of the Junior High and president of the Watchung Area Council BSA, received the Silver Beaver Award at the Watchung Council meeting in Plainfield on February 4. The citation lauded his decades of service to youth through home church and school, and he was reelected president for a third year. A skating rink improvement at Davison Field was noted as well.
The obituary notes the death of Wandra Wilson aged 00 with survivor William McGarry 80 Nason street a sister in Norwood and aalter Mrs nu Brooks of Maynard. The funeral was held at the son’s home in Maynard with Rev Mrs of Norwood officiating and hymns by Beatrice Jordan. Burial followed in Glenwood cemetery family lot.
William Barnes aged 64 died Friday at Massachusetts General Hospital after four weeks illness. Born in Stow he had lived in Maynard since childhood. Survived by widow Catherine, son John, brothers Ralph and Grace Brown, all of Maynard. A member of the Maynard lodge Fo shall pastor of the adist church. Body to Glenwood cemetery chapel.
