James Ryan of Railroad Street was promoted this week from corporal to sergeant of the 23d Company, 6th Battalion, Depot Brigade. He was among Maynard’s early enlistees and earned corporal shortly after arriving at camp. He attended the noncommissioned officers school in addition to his regular duties.

A Ford owned by H M Keto struck John Oclair of Concord Junction Saturday around 9 15 PM. Keto swerved to avoid a pedestrian, hitting a popcorn stand and pushing the wagon into the Maynard Trust Co doorway. Oclair suffered bruises to head and body and was taken to Dr Mlagg for examination.

Fire in Naylor Block Causes Smoke Loss
Fire department responds to a Sunday blaze in the Naylor block on Main St confined to a small area. It started under a runway between the banquet hall and Colonial hall, suspected to be rats and matches. Mrs. Thomas Naylor’s home fills with smoke and Hartwell store below suffers smoke and water damage. This is the second such fire in six months in the same building.

Welcome for Blue Devils Delayed Arrival in Concord
A large crowd greeted the Blue Devils as they passed through Concord on Thursday noon. Chas. K. Darling led the first automobile with the unit marching in heavy army gear and long bayoneted rifles. The parade continued toward the Old North Bridge and then toward Ayer, but lateness prevented a planned stop in Concord.

One year after leaving Boston, New England sawmill units joined British war effort in Scotland. About 350 men raised $150000, led by A F Blanchard of Acton, with Webster Blanchard as unit manager. Prisoner Escapes Farm, Steals Horses and Bicycle
A prisoner at a state farm escaped Monday afternoon June 10 with two horses hitched to a cultivator. The animals were found nearby and the prisoner was recaptured after a few hours, then brought back to the Reformatory. He had also stolen a bicycle in Bedford during the escape.
