Residents discuss a proposed mammoth project at the flag pole near the Elks and Legion shrines, amid rural versus city front concerns. A sewing project in Concord's school echoes broader debates on community changes and urbanization.
Community listings for June include closing exercises at Peter Bulkeley School and multiple baseball twilight league games. Also on the schedule are American Legion and Red Cross activities, swimming classes at Lake Walden, and a Mothers’ Club outing from Trinitarian Church to Solomon's Pond.
Sadie Drysdale daughter of Mr and Mrs David Drysdale Senior of West Concord married Carlton Moody son of Mr and Mrs Harry Moody at her home in Butteville. Rev C X Hutchinson conducted the ceremony. The couple will reside in Gray Gables. Guests from New England included Edwin M Edwardson and Frederick Edwardson of West Concord.
The New England States paper announces a countywide contest for bona fide residents, under the New England Press Association. It seeks knowledge of regional history and geography with 31 cash awards totaling 3000 dollars, first prize 2000 dollars and second prize 600 dollars.
Lawrence Sidelinger, 21, of 647 Arlington was killed when his motorcycle collided with a car on Bedford Road near the Concord Turnpike. In the car were Helen Yelland 21 Medford the driver and her sister Anne and brother Kenneth. George E Paige 110 Cedar Ave Arlington owner escaped with minor injuries. Sidelinger died at Emerson Hospital after being rushed there by State Police. The crash drew a large crowd further worsening traffic.
Concord residents Mr. and Mrs. Christian Thorenson observed their 50th wedding anniversary at home on Strawberry Hill Road. The couple, born in Norway, were married June 13, 1881 and settled in Concord after immigrating to the United States. Mr. Thorenson retired 11 years ago. They have a large family with five sons, three daughters, 22 grandchildren and one great grandson across four living generations.
The Peter Bulkeley school in Concord holds closing exercises at the auditorium on Friday June 18 at 9 a m. Readings include student names such as Frederick Allen Eliza Barr Dorothy Oxatte and many others with letters presentations and a school certificate ceremony. The program features a school orchestra, songs, flag salute, and a glee club performance.
Concord resident and longtime local leader Charles A Sawyer formerly of the old Sawyer farm on Lexington Road died June 14 at Charlesgate Hospital after a two week illness. He led the Concord Board of Trade, headed Judson L. Thompson Manufacturing Co. of Waltham and Middlesex Products Co. of Cambridge, and was MIT graduate of 1888. Funeral set for June 17 at his home with Rev. Edward Daniels officiating. burial in Forest Hills Cemetery. He leaves three cousins and distant relatives.
The special town meeting on June 14 approved Article 1 moving funds from the Municipal Light Plant budget to enable installation and service within its service area. The discussion touched on justice and principles of the decision’s outcome for Concord and the commonwealth.
Troop 2 West Concord Girl Scouts hosted a mothers tea in the Loring Fowler Memorial Library. After opening exercises, mothers were seated by Mrs. Ivan Servais and badges were awarded to Louise Bedford Sybil Gale Frances Callahan Janet Servais Helen King and others for second class scholarship cook artist lifesaver and attendance.
A large group of Concord Girl Scouts will attend several summer camps organized by the State organization. About twenty girls will go from Concord to three Redon sites for two weeks. Joanna Ballou will serve as councillor at Camp Wingaersheek for one month before going to the New England Jubilee Camp near Plymouth for three weeks. Additional troops send six to Four Winds, seven to Wind in the Pines, and others to Wind in the Pines and Wingaersheek. Scouts aim to boost their funds with an August bridge party hosted by Mrs Charles Edmarion. date to be announced.
The Legion Band will hold the first weekly concert in Monument Square on Friday night June 26. The series runs through Labor Day with performances in Concord and West Concord.
The Concord Players annual meeting is set for Monday evening June 28 at 8 on the Veterans Building stage. Reports for the year will be read, officers for 1938 elected, and a general discussion of next year’s program will follow. Members and interested readers are urged to attend.
The Harvey Wheeler School in West Concord lists 42 graduates in its ninth grade class this year. Certificates will be awarded tomorrow June 18 with no exercises or formal ceremony. Agnes Cofline, past grand regent, installed elected officers of Court Irma Dorchester aided by Monitor Miss Elizabeth Connell. Medford Deputy Miss Gertrude Curry stepped in with Miss Connell due to eye infection keeping the district officer at home. Woburn events noted but attendance was limited.
