Memorial day events include the Maynard fife and drum corps at Stow G A R exercises and numerous guests visiting local residents, with many names and towns listed. Others report births, military enlistments in Co I 6th Mass Inf, naval reserve duties, and hospital operations plus garden time due to a mill generator accident.
A series of holiday greetings lists residents visiting relatives in nearby towns and states including Newton Waltham Boston Rutland Woonsocket Dorchester and Describes furloughs vacations enlistees and family movements as Memorial Day observances occur with locals attending services at St Bernard's and Sleepy Hollow cemeteries.
Local residents and visitors include Samuel Merwin with a Cadillac Walter Wood at the high school, Burt Lang in Lowell with the firemen, and multiple families hosting relatives in town. Wentworth Institute nine loses to Concord high school nine 11 to 6 at Huntington Ave. Middlesex school nine defeats Rindge Technical 3 to 0. Federal enlistments include William P. Flavin joining Engineers Reserve and a Plattsburg training camp roster.
A Willow Rebekah lodge and Concord lodge I O O F decorated the graves of deceased members on Sunday. An annual memorial service followed at Union church Circo'd Junction with Rev. A W Stone delivering the sermon.
Rev. Andrew Berggreen, former pastor of the Scandinavian M E church in Concord, now serves as pastor of the Norwegian M E church in Philadelphia and superintendent of the sailors' mission. He reports the new church project is advancing rapidly with magnificent growth since last fall.
A course of six free lectures on Methods of Household Economics will be held at the town hall on Wednesday and Friday afternoons June 6 8 15 18 20 and 22 at 3 o'clock Mrs H H Darling a Simmons college graduate will conduct the series covering food values inexpensive cookery buying and utility waste.
At Concord Country Club Saturday Andrew H. Hepburn defeated Bogy 1 up in a three quarters handicap match. Ellis Richardson halved, Charles F. Bowers 2 down, F A Tower 8, George N. White 3 down, Wightman 5, Fr Howard 7.
The Concord high tennis team defeated Boston English high in a Saturday match at Concord. Singles results saw Lynah over Biiell 6-2, Nash over Culkin 7-5 6-4, Marrs over Kresthem 6-1 6-4. The pair Lynah and Dee beat Bidell and Culkin 4-6 6-2 6-3.
Middlesex school closes the season by beating St George’s School of Newport Rhode Island 7 to 4 in Concord. It marks the third straight year Middlesex has defeated St George’s.
Mr and Mrs Benjamin Moody announce the engagement of their daughter Marion Dickson to James Madison Fairbanks of South Acton. Fairbanks has enlisted in the American Field Service and sails for France June 23.
Patrick Muldoon of Boston spent Memorial day with relatives. Edith Hobbs visited relatives in Beverly and Salem. Catherine Williams of South Boston was a guest of Mrs Jeremiah Sheehan. Richard McCabe returned from Framingham on a 24 hour furlough. J C Dammett of Buffalo, a former resident, called on friends. Holy Name society met at Help of Christians church. Harry Carroll is home with foot infection from a tack. Frank Joyce of Waltham welcomed a daughter, Margaret Rita, born Friday in Framingham Union Ave hospital. Frank Cleaves leaves for Annapolis with niece Ruth Cleaves. Grace Shaughnessy is recovering from appendicitis in Cambridge.
James Berry buys 40 acres from O. A. Knowlton in West Acton. George Blume drives a new seven passenger Jeffrey car. Percy Taylor of Maynard begins work at C. H. Mead & Co. in town. Crosby Hoar of Dorchester visits his brother J. B. Hoar on Memorial Day. WCTU annual meeting held at Mrs. Martin Be. Wood’s home. Miss Pauline Moore and Miss R. Harrington noted in town. Widith Watson and Nellie Knowlton now keep house in the F. R. Knowlton block. Howard A. Mead serves in Co. G, 7th N. Y. Div. at Plattsburgh Barracks. The Pierces visit Salem on Memorial Day in Mr. Pierce’s Ford. Many attend a moving picture show at Odd Fellows hall. New managers Wood and Fletcher of Ayer take over Wednesday screenings. Fred C. Grenier sells his house to William Costello and buys the Preston blacksmith shop at Harvard, planning to stay through fall.
