U.S.S. Concord Fought bravely in the Pacific War
A veteran Omaha class cruiser the U S S Concord CL 10 served from 1940 to 1945 joining the Southeast Pacific and North Pacific forces. It fought shore installations and shipping near Matsuwa Paramushiru and Suribachi Wan in the Kuriles, credited with firing the final WWII naval salvo two hours after the Potsdam surrender. The ship shuttled between the Aleutians and the Kuriles, participated in occupation duty at Mutsu Bay, and was decommissioned in Philadelphia January 8 1946 after a 23 year service record.

The Stow vacation church school will present a program in the Union Evangelical church on Friday July 18 at 7 00 p m. The program is presented for the parents and friends of the church school pupils. Each department will take part and exhibit some of the hand work done during the two weeks.

Packard, Stow Center Pioneer, Dies at 75
Stow Center resident Stow-Pearl W. Packard, 75, died Friday morning at Marlboro hospital after a month as a patient. Born in Camden, Maine, he moved to Stow at age 10 and ran a large Packard Road apple farm. A longtime selectman, he is survived by wife Emily Copeland Packard, son Alden P. Packard, and great granddaughter Edith Em ily of Buffalo. Funeral services were Sunday at 3 PM led by Rev. Paul N. Carnes, with interment in Brookside cemetery.
