UNO delegates to view proposed site in Concord

Eight UNO delegates named to pick the permanent headquarters site are due in Boston soon after visiting New York. Led by Dr. Stoyan Gavrilovic the delegation includes Francois Briere Anya Elkhalidi Shushi Shu Hington Gilchrist Major K G Younger Julio A Lacarte and Georgii Scaksin. They favor a fairly level site near Concord with good land for building and no steep hills.

Services for James Hanley in Concord

A high mass of requiem for James Francis Hanley 62 was held at St Bernard's Church Concord with Rev Mark P Sullivan officiating. Burial followed in St Bernard's Cemetery. Hanley a lifelong Concord resident and former custodian of the Veterans Building Cooperative Bank and Telephone Exchange passed Sunday after a month of illness. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Margaret Gannon daughter Margaret three sons James Jr Joseph N John and two brothers Thomas and Edward of Concord.

Funeral for Miss Jean Gordon Held in Lincoln

Funeral services were held at Lincoln on Tuesday afternoon for Miss Jean Gordon formerly well known hero who died in New York. Rev Alfred B. Starrett former rector of St Ann's Episcopal church of South Lincoln officiated.

Staff Sergeant speaks at Concord Rotary on wartime ordeal

Staff Sergeant Leonard Bernhardt told Concord Rotary Club members of his capture after his Liberator was shot down over Budapest on June 30, 1944 and his later dubious Russian Army commission. He described internment, liberation by Russians in 1945, and return to the United States for medical treatment.

Concord Lions Set January 22 Meeting at Wright Tavern

The Concord Lions Club will meet next Tuesday January 22 at 6 30 PM in the Wright Tavern dining hall at Monument Square. President Leon J Moreau will preside and the program will be announced. a dance is planned for the latter part of January with details to follow.

Miss Berry Weds F J Strate in Concord

Concord Miss Priscilla Rebecca Berry daughter of Mrs Nellie F Berry and the late Arthur W Berry married Frederick James Strate son of Mr and Mrs Alonzo B Strate of Syracuse New York at Trinitarian Congregational Church. Rev John Elmo Wallace officiated. The bride wore white satin and marisette with a long veil and carried white roses. Attendants wore pale blue. A small reception followed at the bride's mother's home. The bride is a Concord High School and Bryant and Stratton graduate and stenographer. The groom is a U S Army veteran from World War II.

Concord School Committee Accepts Miss Smith Resignation

At the January Concord High School meeting in the library, Miss Elsie E Smith resigned from her home economics post to take a new job in Maine. Barbara Gardner of Claremont NH was appointed substitute to fill the position for the rest of the school year.

Concord Chapter polio drive chaired by Charles Mayo

Concord Massachusetts Charles F Mayo chair of the Concord Chapter March of Dimes announces the appeal running January 14 to January 31. Half the funds stay local for hospitalization and care, the rest support the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis research and relief. Registration Dates Set for New Voters in Concord

The Concord Board of Registrars announces two registration sessions for the upcoming town election. Wednesday January 22 at the Harvey Wheeler School West Concord 7 PM to 9 PM. Wednesday February 6 at the Town House Monument Square 12 noon to 10 PM. Eligible voters from either precinct may register at either session.

The Concord Board of Selectmen will hold its next regular meeting Tuesday evening at the Town House. Chairman Hubert M. Wardwell will preside. Concord War Records committee lists 1032 in service

The Concord War Records Committee chaired by Eliot R. Howard reports that at year end 1032 Concord men and women had enrolled in military service, 14 percent of the population. Of those, 128 joined during the year and 418 have been discharged. Details by branch include Army 315, Navy 49, Marines 22, Coast Guard 8, Merchant Marine 11, and various specialized units. A total of 34 Concord servicemen have died. The committee urges released personnel who have not filed the record to visit the Veterans Building to complete entries, including birth data, family, schooling, service dates, branch, and decorations. A more detailed history is being recorded for those who died, with photographs added, to be completed in about a year. The town is asked to consider a permanent form for these records. The report is submitted by committee members Currier, Damon, French, Ripley, Hagerty, Howard, Joslin, Kent, Rix, Orendorff, Sheehan, Cook, and others.

Funeral rites held for Concord woman Ann Cullinane

Ann Cullinane died at home after a lingering illness last Wednesday. The funeral was held Saturday from her residence then at St Bernard's Church with a high mass of requiem. She is survived by her parents Edward J and Mrs Cullinane four sisters Earl Eleanor Mary and Loretta and one brother Arthur who returned from overseas in the Pacific on emergency furlough. Burial followed at St Bernard's cemetery.

Victory Clothing Drive continues through January

The Victory Clothing Drive at Concord’s Fire Station accepts articles for delivery to European countries. The drive remains open throughout January for donations of usable clothing.
