Old Block Prints Shape Chinese Literature Through Centuries
An old analysis argues block printing began in China around 592 A D during Yang Chien's reign and did not rival manuscripts until the tenth century. It credits rapid diffusion of books to printing, notes the Song dynasty as a peak period, and contrasts Chinese output with European works through the Ming and early Qing eras, highlighting vast historical and literary catalogs, gazetteers, and varied genres.
