Liberty Ship Henry D. Thoreau Struck by Storm Near Azores
The Liberty ship Henry D. Thoreau, likely named for Concord naturalist, sent an SOS last Friday near the Azores when a violent storm disrupted its cargo of bombs. Navy vessels converged to assist and the crew and cargo were saved. The vessel carried only crew aboard, not troops.

Two Concord men receive Navy discharges after long service. Lieut. junior grade William D Cochran of Monument Street logged 36 months in fighter squadron roles across the American Pacific and Formosa theaters and studied at Harvard before enlisting. Lieut. Concord Men Open Station at Thoreau and Sudbury Road
William A. Robinson of Walden Street and Edward J. Dalton of Cambridge Turnpike have taken over the Avery and Murphy filling station and repair shop at the Thoreau and Sudbury Road corner. Funeral services were held Monday for Fred T. Boyd Sr. of 3 Court Jane who died suddenly the prior Saturday in his 70th year. Rev Charles Russell Peck officiated at the home of his son Fred Z. Boyd Jr. Burial followed at Steepy Hadow cemetery in Concord. He was born in Cambridge and lived in Concord 15 years, previously in Somerville and was employed in a local shop. He is survived by his wife Myra Langille Boyd, another son Thomas H. Boyd of Washington DC, five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Concord Mourns Lennox Lindsay WWII Salvage Leader
Funeral services were largely attended for Lennox Hubbard Lindsay at Trinity Episcopal Church in Concord. Born in Heidelberg in 1876, he served as Concord Salvage Committee chairman during World War II and held multiple local roles including Kendall Hall trustee and Concord Public Safety official. Surviving are his wife Ruth Adams, two sons Lennox Jr and Mond Lindsay, a daughter Jean Rand Dumont, a sister and five grandchildren. Burial at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery followed at his death last Sunday.

Four discharged soldiers return mail pouch to post office
Four soldiers en route home after discharge at Fort Devens found a mail pouch near the West Concord tracks. Believing the Cambridge office was nearest they planned to return it there. Arlington police questioned them but no charges were filed. Concord and West Concord officers retrieved the pouch and returned it to the post office.
