John R Hinton 68 of 32 Walden Street Concord longtime Trinitarian Congregational Church deacon died yesterday at Emerson Hospital after a three month illness He was born November 26 1874 in Broadheadsville Pa and lived in Massachusetts after marrying Eva Whitney of Bellingham He studied at Georgetown Law and served in the Justice Department and Supreme Court before moving to Concord in 1919 He later worked as a salesman for Real Silk Hosiery Mills Indianapolis Ind He is survived by his wife two cousins a niece and a nephew Funeral services were held at the Trinitarian Church with Rev John Elmo Wallace officiating and burial was at Sleepy Hollow with plans to surround at Bellingham next spring Members of Corinthian Lodge AF and AM served as bearers

War Ration Declaration Forms Printed in Local Papers

A Consumer Declaration form for War Ration B No 2 is printed on page five. Persons who have not received a form may clip it and bring it to any elementary school this week to aid registration work for the local Board. The Government asked newspapers to print the forms to speed up the process.

Lowell Man Appointed Assistant Manager at Reformatory

Major Michael J. Dee, superintendent of the Massachusetts Reformatory at West Concord, appointed Lambert Sullivan of Lowell as the new assistant manager of the textile industrial department. Sullivan qualified high in Civil Service exams but is on duty with the U S Coast Guard in Boston on leave, so Major Dee named William G. Casey of West Concord as substitute.

Blackout Test Planned For Sunday Night

Concord and nearby Civilian Defense units will mobilize for a statewide blackout drill next Sunday evening the first rehearsal since new signals went into effect J Wells Farley says the test follows an official request and will involve a warning blast at 7 55 PM then a short blast at 8 10 PM with lights off and traffic halted factories darkened during the danger period end at 8 20 PM with all clear signals and resumption of normal activity where possible communities unable to fully conform should proceed as closely as equipment allows

Concord Commander Tolman Presumed Lost on DeHaven

Concord born Commander Charles Edward Tolman is viewed by the U S Navy as the skipper of the destroyer DeHaven sunk in a battle off Guadalcanal near February first. Tolman 98, a graduate of the Naval Academy class of 1925, had commanded submarines before leading DeHaven and has two brothers in naval service.

Lindwall Wins Flying Medal for Air Force Merit

Maynard sergeant Erick Lindwall 25 of Cardaier Massachusetts earned an air medal for meritorious service with the Army Air Force. He enlisted in 1941 and has since served in Central Massachusetts postings. The second honored soldier was Charles Perry of Rochdale.

Concord Town Election Produces Limited Voter Turnout

Concord held its annual town election with minimal competition as only one contest drew voters. Total turnout was 663 with most races uncontested. Rev. Edward P. Daniels and Mrs. Florence M. Damon won the School Committee seats, while Hubert M. Wartwell won Selectman unopposed.

Funeral for John Bernard McCarthy in Brookline

The funeral of John Bernard McCarthy 32 former local youth who died last Saturday at Deaconess Hospital Brookline was held Tuesday morning. A requiem high mass was celebrated at St Bernards Church and interment followed at St Bernard Cemetery. Born in Concord he lived in Framingham before moving to Brookline three years ago where he resided at 1056 Beacon Street and served as superintendent of an apartment building. He leaves his widow Ruth Locke of Brookline a brother William T. McCarthy of Concord with the U S Army two sisters Mrs Pauline Lindgren of Groton and Mrs Dorothy Rodgers of Brookline and was the son of the late William T McCarthy and Mary A Martell McCarthy.

Souvenir Guadalcanal flag in Concord memory display

Mrs Dorothy Hutchinson receives a Guadalcanal souvenir flag from her husband Captain Hutchinson. The flag, 30 by 40 inches with a large background scene, was captured by Hutchinson's company in battle. A similar flag was sent to Lt Samuel Melisi of West Concord.
