Sawyer sustained a fracture of the right radius while cranking his auto on Saturday evening. Examination at the hospital confirmed the injury. Mr and Mrs Albert Clifford Bertram E Hall and Clarence D Chicker ing attended a rural drama presentation in Allston on Tuesday evening to see Down in Maine by the First Degree club of Nonantum lodge IOOF. The act is planned for February 9 and 10 by Acton IOOF.
The South Acton Improvement Association held its regular monthly meeting at Exchange range on a Friday night. Topics included the recent sleighing party and plans for another event around the full moon in February if weather allows. A special meeting is set for Wednesday evening February 8 to discuss town affairs. The rooms will be open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 2 to 8 pm. Visitors welcome.
Sickness and recoveries mark the week with J A Goding ill and Mrs W H Davis improving. The Costello family plans to move into their house soon while Mrs Alice Blaisdell is expected home from hospital. IOOF drama set for Feb 9 and 10 with Miss Vera Bradford coaching twelve participants. John McCarthy family to move into their new Mass Ave home. Last Friday two chimney fires prompted fire crews at Jesse Briggs and Charles Boyce homes.
A note from Mrs. Frederick Mead now in San Mateo Florida says the weather is warm birds are singing and flowers are in bloom making life a constant joy in that land of sunshine and flowers. A large crop of oranges for this year is reported.
Miss Mabel Crowson visits Somerville friends for the weekend while Miss Ruth Leighton hosts. Mrs Herbert Scott visits South Acton and Mrs John Peterson. Miss Louise Williams resumes clerical duties in Boston after illness. Ladies' Union plans a February 15 supper chaired by Mrs Anna Hall. Miss Mary Macone visits Lexington for Sunday, and Mr and Mrs J B Loring welcome relatives back from Canada to Assabet Avenue. A Requiem Mass is offered for Pope Benedict at Help of Christians Church.
Mrs Clara Loring entertained guests while Mr and Mrs Kenneth Ganeloff of Beverly recount a sixteen day battle with storms at sea. The tug Teal towed the distressed tender after it drifted twice with a broken propeller, leaving officers and crew exposed and enduring hardship.
Mrs Harvey Stone and family bid farewell to Miss Helen MacDonald in Peabody as she departs for Madrid to assume duties as private secretary to Keith Merrill U S Consul. She sailed from New York January 18 with a brief stay in Paris before reporting to Madrid.
Local notes show visits by residents and visitors, auctions for Simmons College drive, and house changes on Monument and Musketquid roads. Reports cover a theater play, a Friday hop, and praise for Concord street department as sidewalk care receives commendation. Officers of the Concord Women’s Frystes met at the State House torium.
A Republican caucus at C vo hall produced a slate of incumbents with one new candidate Alfred 22 for a vacancy. The ticket appeared unopposed, but independent nominations surfaced with two candidates entering the race for selectman and overseer of the poor. Election day is February 13.
Crowded service at St Bridget’s church led by Rev Edward Crowley for the repose of the late Pope Benedict XV. The church and exterior were draped in mourning. Mr and Mrs W occupied a house in Mill village this week.
John Whitman Rice longtime Sudbury resident dies suddenly at a home visit in January. Born 1856 he served as selectman constable and Grange member and Royal Arcanum. Survived by wife Ida, two brothers Charles and Henry, four sisters, funeral held January 28 at Henry E Rice home with Rev George H Clarke officiating.
The Methodist church group will serve a dinner at the hall on town meeting day. Proceeds support church activities and community programs.
