A special town meeting is scheduled for January 13 to discuss town affairs. The notice names the meeting and location and urges residents to attend.
Mr Hays, 88, and Mrs Hay, 83, marked their sixty fifth wedding anniversary at the dist Episcopal Church. The couple has a large family circle gathered to honor the milestone.
Maynard barber Tarny Columbo on Waltham Street must give three free haircuts to a regular customer after a bet on the Rose Bowl. The bet rewards the customer with three free cuts if Stanford wins, while the barber earns double for the first haircut if Michigan State or SMU prevails on New Year’s Day.
At a December 19 meeting in Concord the Legion Band elected officers for the coming year with George Landini as president and Richard Mahoney and H. Wilson named vice president and musical director respectively. Refreshments followed the vote.
The Masons marked the Yale season with a ceremony led by Ex. Lindsey N. Smith and EB Payson at the piano, with Maynard members providing refreshments and Ex. Robert B Hartin in charge. Officers directed by Scribe Paul H Barnes oversaw the proceedings.
A large gathering of happy children and many adults enjoyed a Christmas program in the church vestry. Santa Claus visited and a Christmas tree addition delighted attendees during the festive party.
Funeral services for Mrs Rose E B O Neil of 466 Main Street Hudson were conducted at her home on Saturday night after a fatal automobile incident. Aged 69, widow of Jeremiah O Neil she was born in Northboro daughter of the late John and Mary Gilshannon. She moved to Hudson at age two and resided there ever since. She belonged to the Married Women's Sodality of St Michael's church. She leaves two sons William of Clinton and Joseph of Hudson, and a brother Peter Goshannon of Hudson. Funeral Director Michael B McNiff supervised arrangements.
Brilliantly illumined churches hosted large crowds for Christmas services. St Brigids St Casimirs and St Georges saw well attended midnight masses and Christmas day services. Finnish Congregational and Finnish Lutheran churches held sermons and children's parties with strong turnout.
A group of boys cleared a wide space in the Assabet River bed and banked a trough to the rink. They used river water to flood the ice creating a safe skating surface while attracting adult attention to their project.
Christmas mail through the post office set new highs for number of letters and cards sold. The staff delivered every piece of mail and gift promptly to homes in time for Christmas.
Marlboro resident John J Heaton of 42 Fairfield Street Maynard faced a manslaughter charge in district court. The case was continued for a hearing to January 7. Heaton was the operator of a car involved in the accident on Main Street.
Concord residents are invited to the first open meeting of the Concord Association. Henry Tennate ton and John Wells Farley will discuss taxation and how taxes can be reduced without harming municipal services. Farley notes Needham’s tax cuts came with preserved town services and will share insights gained through the Needham Taxpayers Association.
Concord notes the six week term of community classes closed with over 1000 students enrolled across seasons. This year 292 joined, with crafts and interior decorating producing home pieces. Instructors include Mrs. Faversham, Rev. Mr. Thurlow, Mrs. Winthrop, and Mrs. Hosmer guiding topics from cooking to international relations.
St Bridget's church sets New Year services with Masses at 7 30 9 10 15 and 11 15 on New Year’s Day and first Friday Masses at 5 45 and 7. Confessions Thursday afternoon and evening and an anniversary Mass for Nellie Conway of South Acton. Beano party and Holy Name Societies union service next Sunday at 3 o'clock with Rev John Sears delivering sermon. Men to receive communion Sunday morning.
Tony Collins, driver of the fire truck, and Patrolman Parsons saw a smouldering log in Fletcher Corner where a pond rescue led to smoke filling a house.
Six year old Charles James Picot of Lane avenue was fatally burned while trying to extinguish a brush fire started with matches beside the station. He was found by firemen, died two hours later at the Veterans Hospital. He is survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Picot.
Sudbury observes the retirement of Reverend George H. Clark after six decades of service. A Wesleyan graduate and Phi Beta Kappa, he led Sudbury activities from Grange to Parent-Teacher Association and chaired the Republican Town Committee. He long served as town moderator and remains active in Masonry. A supply clergyman will fill the post until a permanent pastor is named.
Ten year old Anthony Aurelio, a state ward, rescued eight year old Raymond Pratt from Robbins Brook in Acton. After bringing the unconscious boy to shore he treated him and carried him home, later recovering with both boys in apparent good health. The incident occurred while they were sliding on ice, and Anthony behaved with notable bravery and first aid.
Funeral services were held Monday at her home 310 Main Street West Concord. A high mass of requiem was celebrated in Our Lady Help of Christians Church West Concord with parts played by Miss Julia Dee. Burial followed at Bt Bevrearel cemetery. The obituary mentions Chester of Gorham Maine and Mrs Hiram C Hawkes of Hill Maine.
