Concord News Briefs Highlight Local Church Services and School Plan

Concord notes report a fall term start and updated schedule at Our Help of Christians Church, with morning services at 7 8 30 and 10 plus 7 pm benediction. A new fall term and football coaching changes are announced for local schools. Local residents visit family in Carlisle and York while church events include Rosary gatherings and Holy Eucharist.

Local wedding joins Rogers and Snutey in Lincoln

Conchord reports the wedding of Miss Lucy O Rogers daughter of Mr and Mrs John H Rogers to Leo W Snutey son of John A Gaffey. The ceremony was at the bride’s home with Rev Charles H Stackpole of Melrose officiating. Evelyn Rogers served as maid of honor and Moses C Wilson of Chelmsford was best man.

Final Concord Rev Osborne Crowe Preaches at Pepperell Union Service

Hold Final Concord Rev. J. Osborne Crowe, pastor of the Community church of Pepperell, was guest preacher at Sunday's union service of the Trinitarian Free Church and First Unitarian Church in the former edifice on 7th Street. The service began at 10 o'clock with special music. This was the final summer union service of the season as both churches plan fall and winter programs resuming next Sunday, September 2.

Curtis begins his second year as head coach at Hunt's Memorial Gymnasium with a new assistant John J. Watson. The Concord squad features veterans Willie Pearson and Dave Spooner plus returning backs Lenny Erickson Georgie Fenton Eddie Dee Joe McKenna and Billy Wood. Promising linemen Billy Muscato Warren Baxter Billy Ryan and several freshmen are expected to bolster the roster as preparations continue after the term opener.

CYO Baseball Sets Sunday Game in Lexington

Concord St Bernard’s CYO baseball nines travel to East Lexington to face Sacred Heart at Adams School at 2 30. Last Sunday they fell 5 1 to St Andrew’s of North Billerica as St Bernard’s Juniors won 13 5 over St Andrew’s Fallies. Our Lady’s West Concord plays St Andrew’s at North Billerica Sunday at 2 30 accompanying possible junior and midget games.

Johnson Rites Held for Al M Johnson in Concord

Funeral service for Al M Johnson 59 Hawthorne Lane was held Wednesday at Joseph Dee & Son funeral home with Rev. John Elmo Wallace officiating. Burial followed at Sleepy Hollow cemetery in Concord. Survived by wife Hilma M Hogberg Johnson and stepson Nelson J Johnson. native of Sweden and former resident of Carlisle and British Columbia.

Police Duty Honors for Coast Guard Officer Finan

Patrolman Finan served two years and eight months in the Coast Guard with assignments at several east coast bases including Boston Harbor. He earned a meritorious service citation and is one of two Concord officers in the service, Maj. John T Foster of the U S Marine Corps the other. Finan is married with two daughters.

Three Local Youths Enter U S Service

Concord Selective Service board No 54 inducted three local youths George R Engebretsen of 15 Wald en street and George T Barrett Jr of 17 Elsinore street into the U S Army while Charles L Ward Jr of 15 Monument street was drafted into the U S Navy.

Mrs. James Ward formerly Wilda Bsn of State Road received a bridal shower at the home of her parents on Highland Street in West Concord. Ward, now Mrs. Ward, is married to Staff Sergt Ward who is stationed in Porto Rico with the Army.

Mark Shaw Speaks at Rotary Club Meeting

The Concord Rotary Club hosted a luncheon last Thursday in the dining hall. President Lester B. Whittemore conducted the meeting with Thomas L. Sanborn serving lunch. Guest speaker Mark Shaw of Mesromoe discussed Far East problems and paths to peace. Several guests attended. The next meeting was announced for Thursday, August 30 at 12:15 PM.

Concord Columbus to Hold September 3 Meeting

Concord Council of Columbus plans its next meeting Monday September 3 at 8 pm in Monument Hall. Grand Knight Thomas J Burke will preside and officers will be installed at the second September meeting. Beginning next month, meetings switch to the first and third Mondays. Concord reports plans near completion for a Victory Social to be held by St Bernard’s CYO Thursday night at Monument Hall. The event is open to the public and tickets may be promised from any CYO member. There will be activities for both old and young.

Concord Man Receives Bronze Star for Valor in Europe

Sergeant George H. Harms Sr. of West Concord earned the Bronze Star Medal with the 65th Infantry Division for bravery at Stoppach Germany on April 20. He organized an effective defense, repelled enemy forces, and guided his squad under heavy fire as tanks attacked, aiding a withdrawal and preserving his men amid shelling and destruction. Harms, a squad leader in Company A 26th Infantry Regiment, is long associated with Lansbrook Road area. His wife Sylvia and son Ge are listed as residents.

Old Concord Bedford Railroad History and a Golf Weekend

A historical note recalls a 1846 rail line linking Boston to Concord via Bedford and West Cambridge later extended to Concord through Bedford with a Massachusetts Reformatory addition. A Bedford to Lowell branch was added while service beyond Bedford dwindled. The West Bedford depot was torn down. A weekend golf tournament is planned at Concord Country Club.

Concord rationing office closes Monday evenings

The Concord Rationing Board office will no longer be open to the public on Monday evenings due to gasoline and fuel rationing changes. It will stay open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with Saturday hours 9 a.m. to 12 noon. St Bernards library reopens Friday evening at Monument Hall 7:30 to 8:30.
