A brief note records a Knights of meeting moved to Monument Hall on Tuesday the 2nd. The assembly space shifts from Main Plant to a new location at wealth avenue near Woodworking Office.
Four inmates from the East Cambridge jail and Massachusetts Reformatory staged a Saturday night escape near Thorndike street. Robert Landry led the plan and was captured with injuries after a deputy fired a shot. Joseph Vocci Bernie Ebbs and Robert Olive were seized within minutes. a 16 year old girl visited Landry. The quartet knew each other from Concord jail. Landry was arraigned Monday.
Concord Lions Club members and guests gathered for a summer cookout at Robert Woodbine's Brook Street East Acton home. About 45 attended as hamburgers Weenies corn and salads were served, followed by a social evening. A large committee led by President Lawrence S Kendal organized the event. The next meeting will be at the regular dining hall on Tuesday September 8 at 6 30 PM.
Concord resident Peter P. Hill who has worked at a West Concord plant for several years resigns his job to move to Washington D C for a new role.
Concord resident Mrs Maurice Mc Walter Sr of 12 Belknap street will celebrate her 77th birthday on Monday September 1. Widow of Maurice McWalter she is mother to Judge Maurice McWalter and John J Mc Walter and grandmother to three daughters and several grandchildren.
Concord reports the fall term for Rose Hawthorne Diocesan Catholic School begins September 15 with an added Grade 2 class and an anticipated enrollment of 175 students. The first year had 82 pupils, and two Kindergarten sessions are planned while Grades 1 and 2 run 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 52 Main Street pending a 1953 completion of the $1,700,000 new building.
Teachers in Concord will hold a series of meetings next Tuesday to prepare for the new term. The schedule includes a 10 AM workshop for new teachers, an 11 AM gathering in Wells Hall, a 12 noon luncheon with school committee members, and 2 PM staff meetings at the various schools.
Camp Drum New York reports Lieut John C Delen Jr of Mainstreet West Concord named an aide to Brig Gen Otis M Whitney Concord man and assistant division commander He is no longer connected with Concords Company H Whitney serves as assistant to Maj Gen Edward C Sirois Lawrence commander Yankee Division.
Concord Superintendent Radcliffe Morrill reports extensive summer work on city school buildings and yards. Projects include hot topping drives and fronts, yard improvements at Harvey Wheeler and West Concord, a lawn area for Harvey Wheeler after West Concord razing, classroom lighting upgrades, roof repairs, painting and parapet work, and interior updates at Peter Bulkeley and Harvey Wheeler schools.
General Otis M Whitney, in training with the national guard at Camp Drum New York, was shaken but uninjured when a MP jeep allegedly sped through an intersection and struck his staff car. Whitney dismissed the driver after officials apologised and offered to strip the jeep.
Concord Board of Selectmen will resume regular weekly sessions starting Monday September 8 at the Town House. Meetings proceed at 7 30 each Monday under Chairman Franklin R. Johnson with summer meetings paused.
About 60 Concord locals from the Com pany HM. N. G. and 182nd Infantry depart Thoreau street depot for two weeks of training at Dies in New York. They will drill, attend church services, and face potential wartime duties as the Yankee Division trains, with Maj Gen Harrison hosting officials at a post-journey supper.
Concord regular Sunday morning services are held at Trinity Episcopal Church Elm Street. Rev. William H Clark rector returns from vacation and will preach at morning prayer at 11 and Holy Communion at 8 o'clock.
Final union summer service of local Protestant churches will be held Sunday August 31 at 9 30 in the Trinity Congregational church. Rev Robert H Barber will preach on Getting Hold on God with special music by Irvin Hemming organist and Beth Killam soloist. Union churches will return to their own buildings for regular services afterward.
Superintendent Morrill flew to New York to join the fifth annual National high school driver education program. He will serve as a judge among 16 selected leaders from 0000 high schools nationwide for a one day luncheon at the Hotel Statler in New York City.
Major Gerard J. Burke and Mrs Burke tour local relatives during furlough. Burke, a World War II African campaign veteran, is transferred from Fort Wentworth Staten Island to Fort Robinson Alaska. Mrs Burke, formerly Anne M Neville of Bedford, accompanies him with their two children. Burke has 12 years of U S Army service and is son of Mrs Thomas J Burke of Bedford Road.
The Concord and West public schools open next Wednesday September 3 with about 1525 pupils expected. Superintendent Radcliffe Morrill says enrollment should be similar to last year despite several staff changes and lists the full personnel across administration, teaching, and support roles.
Time table lists school hours at Concord schools with morning and afternoon sessions. Senior high and junior high classes run from 8:15 a.m. to 2:05 p.m. Other lines reference specific periods and routes, though some wording is garbled.
