Town debate pits selectmen and a new building committee against opposition as plans for a $305 000 police and fire station stall. The Heywood site faces court and neighbor protests while a shift to the former town barn could delay construction to 1957.
The Concord school committee voted that new buildings will not be finished in time for the new year. Eleven basement classrooms at Thoreau and seven at Alcott will be used temporarily. Basements and special purpose rooms will be prepared to meet minimum standards for opening day. The resignation of Alcott staffer Janet Leanderson was accepted. The first 1955 school day is set for September 7.
Frank Engebre Stan Musial of the St. Louis Cardinals is named the National League most valuable player three times. The article notes Musial as the sole player to achieve this multiple MVP recognition.
Lincoln center Concord steeplejack Lincoln Louis N Young, 90, climbed the 110 foot Stone Church spire Tuesday to affix the weathervane. The veteran climber, active for over 50 years, displayed surprising agility despite his age, drawing admiration from onlookers.
Concord executive secretary George E. Erickson of the Chamber of Commerce completed Yale University's three year basic course and is now a graduate. The Yale institute marked its 10th anniversary with a party and drew about 340 chamber members from Puerto Rico, Tacoma, Ontario, and beyond.
The Enterprise presents Concord high school enrollment figures, showing growth of over 100 students in 15 years. Annual counts include 1954 with 537, 1953 with 522, 1952 with 496, 1951 with 506, 1950 with 481, and earlier years ranging from 415 to 481. The past five years show about 60 more students per year.
The Municipal Light Plant informs that after August 31 electric bills must be paid at the town treasurer office in Town House or at the light plant office 34 Main Street. No payment collection site will remain in West Concord.
Rev Henry Linse CPS succeeds Rev James G Shea CPS as chaplain at the Massachusetts Reformatory in West Concord. Linse arrives from Shirley Industrial School after two years there and six years of Shea’s service ends. Shea moves to a parish in White Plains New York.
Captain Paul V. Dee of Concord Commandery H M L N G led the boys at Camp Curtis Guild Wakefield as he earned second place in the regiment carbine matches with 190 of 200. He was the sole local scorer while his team placed fourth in both carbines and M 1 matches with all companies of the 182nd Regiment participating.
Smoking in bed was believed to have started a mattress fire at the residence of John W. Hanson 159 Lexington road. Damage was slight and firefighters from both stations responded to box 16 for the 6 o clock blaze. It was the 20st alarm of the year for local firemen.
West Concord reports Ride out Playground children engaged in crafts and games. Pupils prepared for a Friday cowboy party but rain delayed events. Older girls painted lampshades, slept at Camp Thoreau, enjoyed meals, games, and a softball tie with boys.
Ten year old Peter Manchuso son of Mr and Mrs Antonio J Manchuso 13 Walden Street returned home Saturday after nearly a week at Baker Memorial Hospital with polio. He is under Dr Jack K Holmes care and will remain in bed for some time. The case was diagnosed nonparalytic and the second in town this year.
The Ever Ready class of Carlisle Congregational Church will meet at the church Tuesday evening August 23 at 8 o clock. Hostesses are Hazel Dutton Edna Sleeper Frances Whitman and Esther Waterman.
Concord Recreation Commission will not hold closing ceremonies this week for playground classes. All sessions are limited to routine activities in the fifth and final week across five local play areas.
The 23rd Infantry Band sponsored by James J. Mansfield Post A. L. will give its second two hour concert at Nahant Beach as guests of the M. D. C. The first concert featured 26 pieces and the manager Leif E. Stensby plans 29 pieces and an improved performance next Sunday.
Lincoln police broadcast Sunday evening about two girls aged 13 and 14 from Chelsea who disappeared from Walden Pond. The youths returned to their homes later that night, causing anxiety among police and relatives.
