The Extension Service will conduct a farm labor survey as the U S Employment Service registers workers for apple picking. Despite poor spring conditions, the crop is expected near normal at about 33 percent of normal, with MacIntosh apples facing a 25 year scab issue and harvest slated for September 8 to 21 for certain varieties.
The Extension Service surveys estimate about 125 workers for the first period and 100 for the second. Miss Ramona I Davis and Miss Dorothea K Harrison conduct the survey. Spraying rose 60 to 100 percent due to a cold wet spring, poor pollination, a heavy June, and scab infestation. Frost, rain and spores followed, causing growers to apply 15 to 18 sprays this year instead of nine, boosting orchard costs.
Marlboro couple Carl Wilson Walker and wife ordered corn and received a freak ear that started as one and grew to a dozen, said to be half the size of a head. The ear was on Thompson Brothers farm in Framingham where John Mullen, 84, formerly of Marlboro, works.
