Private Albert Bissonette of Ft Slocum is home for the weekend. Several locals, including Miss Annie Lester and Mrs McKinnon, work at area factories. Military moves include Privates Creeley and Riley on furloughs and promotions for Charles Luker. Births, travel to New Hampshire, and notices of employment changes appear among townsfolk with regional ties to Worcester and Concord streets.
Mrs. Annie Feeley of South Acton reports her brother Frank Manning has joined the Coast Artillery and is stationed at Ft. Andrews in Boston. He is 18 and recently worked in Worcester with brother James. Frank is the third Manning brother in service, with John and Eugene in Co. D, 104th Infantry at the front. John was burned in a trench blast and is hospitalized, but as well as can be expected.
Private William McGrath Fr Slo cum and Miss Rose Abrams of Franklin were entertained over the weekend at Mrs Margaret McGrath home on McKinley Street. Miss Mary Murphy of Whitinsville also was a guest of Mrs McGrath.
The Maynard Red Cross received a donation of $13.89 from the members of a Finnish Lutheran church society on Glendale Street during the period.
Ethel Shaughnessy of Belmont visited as a weekend guest. Miss Etta Carroll takes a two week vacation from W. D. Cross store duties. Mrs J R McKenzie and son Ron ala returned from Salisbury Beach. Esther Riley visited Marlboro relatives and traveled home with Helen Kenney. A prisoner escaped Friday but was recaptured by Officer Edw J Lyons. Florence King enjoys a two week vacation from Allen Chair Co. duties in Fremont N H. Mr and Mrs Benjamin Derby and family left for Laconia N H for August. Mrs George Haskell and family moved to Bridgeport Conn to join Mr Haskell who was transferred.
Miss Gladys Hoagland from Tham New Hampshire attended her sister Miss Helen Hoagland's wedding and plans short visits with Rev and Mrs N 8 Hoagland before returning. She will visit Worcester and Southboro and aims to enter the University of Minnesota next fall as a sociology scholar.
Village notes recount a West Concord Fourth of July gathering on the schoolhouse lawn. A Swede and his wife told how immigrant children grow up to contribute as lawyers doctors and builders, highlighting pride in America and the army service of their family. Jeremiah Sheehan funded the event, leaving a surplus for the treasury.
The London Telegraph contrasts calm talk with push to earn money as workers seek week’s end funds amid a busy hustle. The Boston Transcript comments on the pressure to meet expenses and keep up with demand.
Concord miss Gertrude Towle visits Framingham and William Mulcahey returns from Camp Devens. Locals entertain and vacation at Lake Baboosie Amherst N H Chatham and Hubbard Street. The Old Homestead at Norumbega Park draws townspeople.
Members from Concord Lowell Boston Springfield New York attended a Worcester convention at Red Men’s hall. An emergency ambulance for France was funded with about 10 000 raised, to be manned by a Norwegian descent American doctor and driven by a Norwegian descent soldier, named The Sons of Norway.
Sergt Joseph B Keyes writes from the American Expeditionary Forces in France praising American troops. He recalls patrols that left eight men returning with seven bodies and notes high courage, mentions Paris meeting with MacKenzie, Fonck air combat, and a dramatic air battle near the cantonment. He signs loving regards from Joe.
Rev F M Gardner D D will preach at Union Church on Sunday Aug 18. His Boston pastorates boosted his reputation for ability and eloquence. The public is warmly welcomed. Tuesday prayer meetings for two weeks will be led by CBE society members.
The note explains St Swithin's Day on July 15 and the superstition that rain forecasts forty days of rain. It adds that official weather records do not support the tradition.
Dispatches to Maynard reveal Private Emmett McCarthy gassed by mustard gas July 14 in southern France while recovering in a base hospital. Private Dominick J. Moore and Private Magloire Lesage are seriously wounded in action July 22 and July 20 respectively, both in Co. D 104th Inf 26th Div. with their families notified. Private Roy Nelson, also of Co. D, 104th, was severely wounded July 22, and all are from Maynard and surrounding towns.
West Acton residents and visitors are listed as families travel and socialize. P H Willis spent the weekend in Walpole New Hampshire with relatives while Mrs Ora Willis visited Fitchburg. John Littlefield and family from Medford stay two weeks in town.
Arthur Sudbury Hawes enjoys a vacation. Sunday services drew a good crowd at the Unitarian church. Preaching is set for next Sunday at the M B E church. Vincent Clarke left for Hampton Roads and may depart for distant routes. Hosn home hosted a house party and relatives visited, including Mr and Mrs Fred Hosmer and daughter. Mrs W M Parmenter earned her chauffeur’s license and will drive her own car.
The Woman's club hosted a successful lawn party on Thursday evening with large attendance. Music featured Mrs Maynard no, Mr Stone, Miss Eaton, and Mr Burr. ice cream popcorn and peanuts were sold. a service flag presentation and Star Spangled Banner closed the event. 24 Honor Roll names were on display and more expected.
