Farmers from across Middlesex County gather at the Wayside Inn grounds for a large outing and picnic hosted by Henry Ford. State police supervise traffic as automobiles fill the area, recalling the inn’s old era of horse and carriage.
Local woolen mill leaders voice cheerful optimism for the coming season. Assabet and Maynard mills show strong samples for August markets, with men’s wear leading and women’s wear to follow. O C Drechsler of Assabet reports good business ahead and may visit New York during the silk and wool sample show. The industry expects six weeks of active orders and a busy winter ahead.
Henry Ford and party were at lunch when a Townsend owned passenger bus caught fire among fifty parked cars near The Wayside Inn. Fire department quickly saved surrounding vehicles, but the bus was practically demolished.
Fair today with warmer temperatures and a Thursday transition to cloudy skies. Northern New England shows unsettled conditions today but fair weather expected Thursday.
Maynard Mass August 13 Tom Taylor Mainstreet raiser of fancy racing Homer pigeons entered six young flyers in a race from Greenfield. His six pigeons won the first six prizes in a field of 300 birds under the Lowell Homing Pigeon Association. The 66 mile flight took 1 hour 17 minutes and 28 seconds. Next Sunday Taylor plans a 100 mile race from North Adams to Maynard.
Dorchester Blues defeated the Bedford Rangers 6 to 2 in a fast baseball game at Page Field last Saturday afternoon. Biggs and Warner were the battery for the home team. A big benefit dance at Dolan’s Nutting’s Lake Casino is planned for Friday evening from 8 to 12 with Vincent’s All Star Orchestra of Boston providing music. Road Commissioners and Engineers are praised for a new road stretch between Comis Street and Hillside Avenue on the Great Road. Friends and relatives of Casno Alban and family of School Avenue report his illness keeping him bedridden for two weeks.
In Concord Junction the Paragons win 8 to 5 over Union Club after a rough second inning. Waters opened with a single before McDonnell tripled. N Williams and W Williams starred in fielding and base running. McDonnell contributed later with a triple and double as Paragon improved their lead while Walsh pitched solidly for Paragon.
Arnold 8 Marshall returns home after six weeks at the Al Proving Grounds Maryland. Tech boys report an interesting time spent during the stay.
A large gathering by the Ku Klux Klan occurred in west Sudbury on Friday evening with several new local members. State police and Sudbury officers ensured security as some out of town threats arose while the meeting remained peaceful and smaller than the prior week.
The Legion’s Carnival advertisement for August 6 was postponed due to a severe electrical storm. It will be held two weeks later on Wednesday August 20.
Elizabeth Mary Seymour, sixteen months old, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Seymour of 30 Hastings Street, Marlborough, died after a short illness from cholera infantum. Funeral set for 2:30 this afternoon with interment in Rural Cemetery Southborough.
Mrs George Poitras and her sister Miss Eliza Senecal of Broad Street are spending a month long vacation in Woonsocket Rhode Island as guests of Mr and Mrs Ernest Dupre.
At the inn entrance a six foot state patrolman manages visitors to the priceless antiques inside. Ford remains inside until noon as Harvey Firestone and the anticipated Edison arrive to plan a camping trip. A replica sign from Red Horse Tavern marks the corner, with Howe family dates, sign and clock on display. The exhibit includes the original grandfather clock works now kept in a case. Ford and his party plan to stay a few days in South Sudbury.
