Concord Board of Appeals approves five decisions after a July 27 public hearing, denying the Ruggiero request to remove loam on Conant Street. Grants with restrictions include an antique shop use on Lexington Road, loam removal on Old Bedford and Meriam roads, and gravel removal for Thomas Quinn estate on Lexington Road. A frontage variance on Martin Road for Lot 13 and an increase from 16 to 18 patients for Thoreau Nursing Home were also approved.
Concord town officials report the highway department has nearly finished its annual retreatment program. Recent work includes asphalt and pea stone resurfacing on Stow Street Old Road to Nine Acre Corner between Main Street and the hospital Hill Street and other streets. Crews will next tackle tie work on Old Bedford Road.
Concord The Lions Clue sponsored bicycle safety program will be next Thursday August 18 at 10 am. About 40 to 45 bicyclists will be entered and judged by Police Sergt James Hanley safety officer. Top prizes will be awarded with Lions officers serving as judges. Preliminary safety rideings have been held at various playsteads.
Concord Lodge of Elks creates an annual 100 dollar scholarship for a Concord Carlisle Regional High School senior chosen by the principal. Named for John J. Bent, the fund honors a charter member. The first recipient is George Ridout of West Concord. The presentation will occur at the lodge’s August 23 meeting with Mrs. Bent and Principal John F. Donovan in attendance.
A son was born to Mr and Mrs Charles Nuzzo at 60 Barretts Mill Road on August 5. A son was born to Mr and Mrs Max Bressett at 62 Commonwealth Avenue on August 6.
