Concord veteran J William Byron dies after brief illness

J William Byron 67 a Concord resident and veteran of the Spanish American War died last Saturday evening at Emerson Hospital after a brief illness. He served as postmaster in 1916 and was active in the Knights of Columbus Elks Holy Name Society and local veterans groups. Funeral services were held at St Bernard's Church with a firing squad from Troop D Massachusetts State Guard. He was survived by his widow Helen R Fitzpatrick Byron and a brother George A Byron with several nieces and nephews.

Concord Lions Club entertained returning servicemen Capt Burke Lieut Rushe Lincoln Fish and Lieut Melisi from the U S Army Navy and Marine units Speaking veterans recounted North African Guadalcanal and Pacific campaigns and praised Concord men for valor dedication and care of fallen comrades The event highlighted recovery needs and local pride in wartime service.

Omission of Lieut Richard P Howard in casualty list noted

The Enterprise apologizes for omitting Lieut Richard P Howard from the week’s casualty list. Howard, 25 Monument Street, U S Navy, was reported missing in action in the North Atlantic area by the Department last January, son of Mr and Mrs Eliot R Howard.

Service for Mrs Leach 86 in West Concord

Mrs Estella Felton Leach 86 of 12 Laws Brook Road West Concord died Monday evening in a local rest home. She was born in Maine and widow of Harry Leach who died 16 years ago. Survived by eight children and six great grandchildren. Funeral Thursday at MacRae Funeral Home Concord with Rev Kenneth Teed officiating. Burial at Forest Hills Cemetery Boston.

Concord Hero Receives Highest World War II Honor

Captain Pirnie, from Concord, received a top World War II award for extraordinary leadership. He led his battery through enemy territory without a compass or map, guiding troops 25 miles back to safety after their position was overrun. His father, Major in World War I, and his brother also serve in the military. Pirnie graduated from Harvard in 1941 and held ROTC and O.M.T.C. credentials.

Randolph Field Graduate Receives War Bond at Gulf Coast Training Center
