Fur Take Dwindles in Face of Growing Wild Fur Population

The federal Fish and Wildlife Service reports a decline in the annual fur take in the United States while wild fur animal populations rise. Frank G. Ashbrook notes warehouses bulging with raccoon, opossum, skunk, fox and coyote furs and calls them unwanted furs. Raw furs fetch 25 cents or less per pelt in many states, with some species of long haired furs not being bought. Ideas to revive demand include shearing, clipping and dyeing to create new exotic products. Fashion shows已有 crimson and dyed fur tones, and experiments in fancy leathers from unwanted skins progress. Suede items and small accessories may emerge, while some cheap raccoon makers hope Danl Boone style hats sell again to teens and skiers. A Joe College revival of raccoon coats is not expected due to high labor costs.
