Fourteen Die in Pittsburg Factory Fire
In Pittsburg on October 26 a four story Union Paper Box Company factory fire killed fourteen young women and burned eight. Mayor Armstrong ordered a full inquiry by police city council and the coroner as smoke and flames trapped workers on the upper floors. About 18 colored inmates on the second floor of the Knox County Jail escaped Monday night after sawing bars and enlarging a bathroom window hole. Moses Aull returned to prison hours later, reporting the group used two saws and tied blankets into a rope to descend to the ground and flee toward the river.
