Royal Edward Sunk and Troop Losses Reported
The British transport Royal Edward was torpedoed and sunk in the Aegean last Saturday. About 600 survivors were saved from 1,350 troops and 220 crew from a total of 1,570 aboard, mostly reinforcements for the 29th division. This marks the first time a British transport has been successfully attacked by a submarine. The ship was ferrying troops to the Dardanelles front as German subs increased activity in those waters.
