Midshipman Bullock Falls From Hartford Top
Annapolis July 22 Midshipman William J Bullock Jr of Corsicana Texas fell to his death from near the top of the old frigate Hartford lone days after a dormitory feat. He climbed to the massmast and pierced his cap with the spike then lost his hold during descent and plunged about 109 feet to the deck. Bullock had just earned a rite of passage and was on leave with Midshipman Alston, Texas. Witnesses say the descent attempt failed when he slid on one rope rather than looping two ropes. He died of injuries likely sustained upon impact with the crossbars.
