Enrollment in Rochdale public schools stands at 1575, up 100 from a year ago, reflecting steady growth across Rockdale district schools.
The Comanche Indians face the favored Coleman Bluecats at Hufford Field after Coleman beat Anson 12 0 to open the season. Coleman’s Thomas Casey starred with 175 yards rushing and two touchdowns while Greaves led Comanche last season in a 22 0 win. Injuries limit key players as Richard Brooks and Paul Ray McKinzie work back, with Danny Sanford sidelined by knee trouble.
Iredell trounced the Gustine Tigers 38 to 12 at Tiger Field in the season opener for both teams. Gustine hosts Turnersville on Thursday September 8 at Gustine. Coaches Robert Hurst and Richard Gilbert say the Tigers show strong enthusiasm and aim to be a top six man district team.
JA Willie Smith has been hired as a special patrolman to escort J. B. Layne Elementary students across the Highway 16 crossing one block west of the school. Chief J. L. Shook announces the extra precaution and asks pupils and parents for cooperation. Smith will work on school days 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the crossing.
Ted Durham a local druggist was elected president of the 1960 Indian Club in a Tuesday night meeting. Bill Wilkerson became vice president and Boyd Anthony was named secretary treasurer. Meetings occur Mondays at 7:00 p.m. in room 202 at Comanche High School for about an hour with game films and scouting reports.
Stephenville Presbyterians announce dedication ceremonies and an open house for their new PCA building this Sunday. The event invites members and the public to tour the facility and learn about its ministry and programs.
The Comanche Indian Bowling League started its winter session with two players recording 200 games, Bobby Seals 202 for Jokers and Ken Froh 200 for Choice Baking Co. Seals led with a 524 series while Jamie Oden posted 496. Defending champs tied atop. Eight teams compete as handicaps take effect next week amid a tight season. Meanwhile the ladies league saw Go Gulf and Scott Electric lead with four wins each. Separately, the Comanche PCA dedicates its new field office in Stephenville with a 3 p.m. Sunday ceremony and open house.

Attendees urged to seek loan info from the ASC County Office.
Mrs. Euell Arthur chair of Comanche County Heart Drive Association will attend the Texas Heart Association Go Like 60 program in Dallas this weekend. Speakers include Dr. Ernstone of Cleveland Dr. Paul Oglesby of Chicago and Dr. Wilkins of Boston. Mrs. Arthur notes the workshop is voluntary with attendees paying expenses to learn practical forms to fight heart disease, the leading killer.
Antonio Hidrogo known as Johnny, 19, of Comanche died in a crash on Highway 36 east of Comanche when his car collided with a trailer truck driven by Jimmy Norton Jr. Norton was uninjured. Hidrogo’s funeral was held in Comanche with burial at Oakwood Cemetery. He was survived by his wife Julia and four brothers and a sister.
