Comanche merchants reported unusually strong business Saturday describing it as the best in eighteen months and the best of the year. Crowds filled the town from morning, with parking tight and shoppers active even during the band concert. Traders foresee another brisk turnout next Saturday.
Comanche edged Gatesville 6 to 0 in a hard fought Saturday basketball battle. The report highlights blocking by Tate and Woodward as standout aspects of the game.
All is set for the Gustine Community Fair opening today with exhibits of farm products canned goods edge and fancy work livestock and poultry. A large crowd is expected as Supt Strickland reports a wide variety of exhibits and activities.
Dr. Charles W. Gray, recently with the United States Army, relocates to Comanche to practice medicine. He will office with his father, Dr. A J Gray, continuing a family medical line in the community.
The Grand Jury remains in session with no report by Thursday night. The civil jury docket continues next week while the criminal docket is moved to the following week. Mrs Amelia Bowmen wins a divorce verdict with custody of their 18 year old daughter Betty Jo and associated property.
Wilburn Daniel of the Gustine F F A Chapter attends the National F F A Convention in Kansas City with partial expense coverage. He aims to earn the American Farmer degree, having already earned the first three degrees and hoping for the fourth. He is the second Gustine member to attend, following R J Stateville who attended in 1935.
Palmer, manager of the Gustine Mercantile Company, travelled to Comanche to arrange printing with The Chief for a two day sale opening this morning. The sale, tied to the Gustine Community Fair, runs for two days.
Hamilton High School’s Bulldogs travel to Comanche this afternoon for a grid clash at 3 30 p m Coach Glenn Frazier’s Redskins face a must win to stay in the race Comanche and Hamilton have had several notable meetings with strong crowds at the Hilton County Fair and this game may draw the biggest turnout of the season weather permitting
Seven thousand four hundred tax free exemption certificates are available to Comanche County farmers in 1935. 90 percent of regular allotments amount to 6380 bales. 10 percent additional allotment to 345 bales. replacement certificates total 375 bales. 350 bales unsold pool return. 1954 surplus pooled 1050 bales with 68 percent sold at 20 dollars per bale and 32 percent returned to 1935 crop. 1195 farms received a portion of the 10 percent State Pool. Eligibility tied to historical cotton acreage and yields. continued details on page 5.
The Durham Pecan Plant completed moving to the former Cottonet Depot this week and is now in operation. It is described as one of the most complete in its region. The adjacent grocery store remains at its former stand, enlarged and remodeled, with Henry and Gilmore Durham in charge.
About seven cars of peanuts sold here on Tuesday as prices hit a new high of 98 cents. Gross receipts for the day climbed to roughly $9,000.00.
Four truck loads of mattresses and comforts were sent to Comanche County Relief Office from Waco headquarters this week. J. M. Hill stated 150 mattresses and 450 comforts are part of the shipment, with county and city trucks provided for transport.
Miss Elizabeth Tate daughter of Mrs. George W. Tate of Comanche has been selected for the cast of the first Little Theater production at Texas State College for Women. The play Children of the Moon will be directed by Emory G. Horger. Mrs. Tate majors in dramatic art and is a senior Betsy Ross Literary Society member.
J M Marshall of Howard Tayne, who attended the S M U Rice football game in Dallas, was seen in Comanche on Sunday visiting local residents and returning from the outing.
Oran Clark arrived in Dallas as a visitor on Monday, drawing attention from local residents and business circles for his activities during the stay.
Dallas Internal Revenue Collector W A Thomas spoke at the Comanche Lions Club lunch urging bond purchases for Baby Bonds savings and endorsing F D Roosevelt and the New Deal. He outlined a threefold tax plan and criticized The Saturday Evening Post while detailing U S Savings Bonds terms and local purchase through Postmaster J R Eanes.
Eight Comanche FFA District schools met at Comanche High School to elect district officers for 1985 86 and outline objectives. Officers elected were President Greenwaldt Gustine De Leon. Vice President Sidny Douglas. Secretary Payne. Treasurer Scott Priddy. Parliamentarian Rush. Historian Anglen. Farm Watch Dog Duster. Objectives focus on leadership development member confidence and increased FFA activities including training schools and state regional fair representation. The plan calls for Growth in Future Farmer degree Lone Star Farmer degree expanded Manuals and farm home improvements plus participation in the Texas Centennial exhibits in Agriculture Livestock Poultry and FFA work.
William Harrison, 18, arrested near Blanket after a 15 mile pursuit from a Proctor station to Comanche and Blanket. He admitted no location origin and faces car theft charges. The stolen 1984 Chevrolet was linked to Dallas owner T. J. Theiner. case may fall under Comanche County jurisdiction.
Donald Howington, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Howington of Comanche, earned an all expense paid trip to Kansas City with the Texas F F A Pand. He was recommended by Director Pat Howard to Prof. Rylander of Itasca, who led the Texas Band. Howington returned Thursday.
H N Smith spoke to 58 Comyn area farmers and Vocational Agriculture students on soil conservation. He cited 40 000 tons of productive soil lost yearly to the Gulf of Mexico and outlined methods such as terracing strip cropping rotation contour plowing and soil saving domes.
Miss Alma Grainger spent part of last week in Denton with her niece Mary Lou Mellhaney who is attending the College of Industrial Arts in the city.
Comanche County schools received about 15,000 dollars last week from the states promised 17.50 per pupil apportionment for this term. The funds were credited to each institution’s account in proportion to its number of students.

County agents announce three community meetings to explain the 1996-35 wheat contracts. Obvious turnout urged as 95 percent of local farmers favor the new program. signups to occur at Newbury Mercer Gap and Comanche Court House events each at 7:30 p.m.
Duster FFA members participated in selecting eight district officers during the Tuesday night meeting October 15 in Comanche. Ferrer Anglin of the Duster FFA was elected Farm Watch Dee for the Comanche County District as eight chapters attended and each was to receive one officer. Roy B. Mefford, District Vocational Agriculture Supervisor, attended and helped the groups with questions.
Final federal approval allocates 15 210.85 for widening and caliche topping of 6.5 miles from Sipe Springs to Highway 86 north of Sidney. Project aims to create six months of work for 30 to 40 men with 90 percent labor from relief rolls under Commissioner L. F. Little. State approvals include multiple Comanche County projects totaling tens of thousands across Sidney, Ris ing Star road, May and Gap, and No. 26 northwest from Comanche.
The Farmers and Merchants Bank of Priddy reports deposits over 50 thousand dollars as of October 21. Individual deposits total 47 thousand eight hundred twelve dollars and 14 cents with time deposits at 4 thousand. Total resources equal 67 thousand six hundred fifty nine dollars and eighty six cents net with responsibilities over 100 thousand dollars.

Federal officials approve a $12,000.00 Comyn school building funded partly by federal money and bonds voted in August. The brick and tile structure will include a gymnasium two classrooms two dressing rooms and showers with Vocational Agriculture taught there. Construction to start soon.
